rare breed rabbits?

halfpenny

Wise Old Thumper
My blacksmith arrived today and asked if we had any spare animal carriers, someone he does needs to borrow 3. I asked why and he said that she is going down south somewhere to collect 6 rare breed rabbits to breed.

Even though I could spare some, I said no, there are enough rabbits and I ain't going to even distantly involved in helping add to it.

Still, it got me wondering, are there any rare breed rabbits?

yes, there are quite a few apparently, I don't know any more off the top of my head, but I know the Giant Papillon is a rare breed!

Giant Papillon - rare giant breed... apparently. Noisette is yellow and probably one of the rarest colours out there.

I think possibly Giant Angoras, Fauve de Bourgone, Champagne d'Argent... and I think the Lilac is an incredibly rare breed too. A forum member here owns one :)roll:)

These are the ones I think are part of the Rare Varieties Rabbit Club...
Fancy:
Giant Papillion
Rhinelander
Thrianta
Tri Dutch

Fur:
Beige
Blanc de Bouscat
Blanc de Hotot
Blanc de Termonde
Deilenaar
Golden Glavcot
Hulstlander
Perlfee
Pointed Beveren (?)
Sallander
Squirrel
Sussex
Swiss Fox
Thuringer
Vienna
Wheaten
Wheaten Lynx

Lop:
Meissner Lop

I've seen most of these breeds before, they're gorgeous  I own 3 Thriantas at the moment, but looking after 5

There are lots of other breeds you rarely see as pets, but they do have their own breed clubs so are not classed as a Rare Variety

Haven't seen them much as pets in this country, but there are enough breeders to form a club for the breed

it's a dilemma

While on the one hand there are way too many bunnies bred, on the other it is nice to think that there are a few examples of the rarer breeds kept going, as in farm animals, for historical purposes and education, but only if the breed isn't physically extreme in a way that causes the animal discomfort. Rabbits must be able to behave properly rabbitty without pain or discomfort. So it would be a shame if some of the rarer breeds disappeared. Other uncomfortable breeds may need to be photographed, documented and allowed to disappear.
