Rabbit shows?

I've not heard of a rabbit show before tbh but i wouldn't go to one either, i know how distressed mine get just going in the car to the vets but to then be amongst loads of people milling about in a strange environment would be terrifying for them :?

I would imagine it's full of breeders aswell, displaying their latest stock, having met a backyard breeder who goes to shows who eats his stock and told me that a lot of the 'breeders' do this, I would steer clear or most likely end up arrested.

Do you mean a bit like Crufts for bunnies ??

Yes she does, the difference between crufts and rabbit shows is that all the dogs have to be vaccinated, they are all registered with the Kennel Club, dogs travel quite well, dogs are generally not eaten by their breeders, dogs are allowed a bit more exercise than rabbits at shows, dogs are not prey animals so naturally more confident and outgoing and don't mind so much being handled.

 I had NO idea that such a thing even existed! (for rabbits that is)!

And that info about the breeder who eats his own stock ....... I'm absolutely gobsmacked!

I think I must be a bit naive!

Rabbit shows are usually organised by the British Rabbit Council, if you contact them they'll be able to tell you dates and venues in your area.

Shame on the British Rabbit Council

I've just been on their website, they've got a section on rabbit housing and nowhere does it even say anything about minimum size requirements, and even says "most reputable pet shops sell good quality hutches suitable for a pet rabbit in the garden", pfff... don't know what pet shops they've been in lately. The ones they have pictured a prison cell hutches too :censored:

Edited to add: and why does their hutch need to be located 7 metres away from your house? Mine's not and I can't think why it should be??

Sorry to go off track on the thread btw

There's lots of agricultural shows around this time of year, have a look around your area. :) I went to one with my rabbit so he could do jumping, he was absolutley fine and wasn't scared by the noise at all, everytime someone came near he wanted them to rub his head. He's used to it though cos he was stuck in a pet shop for 5 months! If you want to take a rabbit, I don't recommend it unless they are used to lots of people and don't mind car journeys. My rabbit has been to the vets for his neuter and check ups and his vaccinations so he is used to car journeys and just snuggles up in his carrier. :)

Sorry, dont know of any in Sussex, not near me.

But just to reply to previous comments. Rabbit shows are perfectly ok if the rabbits are fine with it, and most are (show rabbits i mean). I would suggest you go along to one and decide wether or not they are for you. They can be alot of fun, talking to people, entering in pet class (was a right laugh at the last one I was at:lol:)

For you maybe Veejay, not the rabbits though I am sure, bet they were glad to get home. Gosh yes I bet it was hillarious, a real scream - can't think of anything worse personally apart from maybe a visit to the slaughterhouse.

right....
as said in previous post. If the rabbits are fine.:)

i didnt wanna cause any offence,i dont intend to take any rabbits,i just meant a show where people win for best rabbit in show etc or just a animal/agricultural show in general. I think owners who enter their rabbits into a show are kind ,caring owners who love and are proud of their buns! and im sure wouldnt want to cause them stress

Totally agree, :) I wouldn't take my rabbit if I knew it would cause him stress, of course not, I'd be devastated if anything happened to him. That goes for all 3 of my rabbits, I have only ever taken one to the one show I have been too. I'm not sure if the others would like it so I don't risk it. :thumb: Jasper is used to car journeys and just curls up in his carrier and is used to alot of people after being in a pet shop for 5 months. My other too ere bred from a friend so are not used to people like he is. :) Only if rabbits are ok with shows should you take them never just for your enjoyment.

You haven't caused offence to anyone Jody, in an ideal world yes people who enter their pets would be as you say, sadly as with dogs most of the people attending shows are not taking family pets along, although there are some, most are bred for the show often to win money although I believe where rabbits are concerned the financial prizes are relatively small, all animal shows are based on a pre-determined idea of perfection, I find it all a bit vomitsville as the owner of rabbits who wouldn't be deemed fit to 'show' they are priceless as my pets and beautiful, same with my dog, she was the runt of the litter and wouldn't be able to win but, to me she is gorgeous.

I agree with you to some extent on that one. I hate the idea of rabbit shows but I do attend rat shows(I don't show any myself). The first thing that's looked at in a rat which will win a show is temperamant. If the rat is at all scared or angry about being there then it has no chance of winning and only relaxed well socialised rats are ever shown.

I don't see how a rabbit could be relaxed in this sort of suitation, even my most unhandleable rat (I take the ones with behavoiur problems and/or other issues) would react better in a show than any rabbit I have met to date and there is no way I would even contemplate taking her along to a show.

:shock::cry: I was nearly sick when I read that
