what does it mean if your vet is...

accredited by the RCVS as a small animal general practice.

Im guessing that its a good thing that it is accredited by the RCVS. However the word general worries me, only because if my rabbits have a serious condition such as a URI or stasis does that mean they are not as experienced as other vets?

Im having problems finding a vet in my area that specialises in rabbits. The closest one is harrogate and theres no way i can get there. I have been using Marske Vets and White Cross Vets in Redcar.

Nope they're not less experienced as a vet .... but they may not necessarily have a rabbit savvy vet on their books either if that makes sense ......there's more information here: http://www.rcvs.org.uk/PracticeStandards

Sorry but that doesnt make things any clearer for me. :?

I just need to know if my vet is rabbit savvy, if they come down with a serious illness are they going to run the apropriate tests/procedures, or are they simply going to say "sorry theres nothing we can do"

Im not really on the ball today, having a really bad day. Things have to be spelt out for me sometimes

It doesn't mean much for rabbits. It mean they are accredited to treat cats and dogs, rabbits are classed as an exotic by RCVS. Where are you?

I think it's worth finding an exotics vet, if poss. Where abouts do you live? Someone might be able to recommend one.

Redcar & Cleveland.

My vet is an accredited small animals general practice according to the RCVS but i wouldnt trust them with my buns if there was a serious problem

i would rather find a vet by recommendation than that acreddited thingy (which i dont understand myself lol)

if i was looking for a new vet i would email a load of questions, i think i know what answers i want to hear after 3 years of rabbits, then whoever came back with the most positive answers and i got the best gut feeling with id register there.

there was a time when i thought id need to do this so i sent out a mass email. one vet said they wasnt a specialist BUT was in regular contact with one in bristol and one in solihull (i think) and he had about 800 rabbits on his books which gave me confidence that although he wasnt totally savvy he knew his limitations and would get second opinions if out of his depth, that one answer really impressed me :D
