Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rearguard?

Hi everyone.

So glad I had a look at the thread about forum lingo. Whilst there i read something about Rearguard. I think that is how it is spelt?

Aparently it helps to prevent flystrike, or helps prevent the larve turning into maggots.

Is it something you have to get off a vet?
Is it effective?
Is it expensive?
Can i get it in the UK, if so where from?

Eeshh, questions, questions, questions!

Would love to know more about it. We have a recent addition to our family; a lionhead lop. Since he lives outdoors and he has thicker hair than my Netherland Dwarfs i would imagine he's much more prone to flystrike than the other two.

Has bunny got teeth problems, over weight or mobility probs cos if hes well and has a good diet and is kept clean, he shouldnt get flystrike.
I know, we are all paranoid about that word on here..........

Thanks Guys :)

He's our new guy, Yvette, he's still a little shy so i'm not sure what is normal for him just yet. I had him checked over by a vet when he had his jabs and from what they said everythings hunky dory! :)

... hes a little picky with his food, but hes eating his hay and veggies so im happy.

Thanks for those Santa, ill check them out and have a word with my vet.

Oh and i forgot to add...
I'm not concerned about the other two rabbits, as they are always grooming themselves, so vein!! and they're coats arent as thick. Clarence is a lionhead lop though, i haven't had a lot of experience with them, but aparently they arent so great at keeping themselves clean.

Those links were very helpful too Santa. x

Hi
Just wanted to let you know that Ive seen a few threads on here recently from people whose buns have had a nasty reaction to rear guard.
You might just be better off grooming him loads, keeping his living space really clean and taking measures to deter flies eg citronella oil, fly catchers, mozzy nets etc.
Hope that helps xxx

Couldnt have put it better myself!!!!:wave:

yeah i agree if you keep him clean and he has no teeth problems which cause him to be unable to groom himself i would leave it. reargaurd can cause inappetance for a good 24hrs and can cause other reactions also so should only ever be used in healthy buns and really if their healthy why should you need to use it?

it's one of those swings and roundabout situations really keepin the environment and being vigilant will work just as well if he's a healthy bun reargaurd is also a bit pricey.
