Good Vets & Hay Suppliers Needed - Newcastle/ Northumberland

Mad Bunster

Mama Doe
We are soon moving back to our Newcastle, but as I've not lived there with my bunnies before - I've no idea which vets are any good now. Can anyone please give me recommendations for a brilliant vet please! I've got a bun with jaw osteomyellitis who will need close monitoring (life long antibiotics too) and another bun with a spinal problem that could flare up again - so I need a brilliant vet!

I know we've got a few members here from Newcastle - I wonder if they could help me out at all?? I don't mind travelling for the right care - although not sure how mobile I'll be after our baby is born.

Thanks!!

Oh yes, and where do you get your buns food (SS) and hay please?

 Metrovets at Longbenton are great (me and Jenefina will have the whole North-East going there between us ). Also heard great things about Vets4Pets at Forest Hall.

Not so sure about hay suppliers as I have nowhere to store a bale, I buy my hay and SS pellets from Robinsons in Grainger Market xx

I use vets4pets at Heaton. Don't know about other illnesses (and hope never do) but I had Molly spayed and her ear stitched up there and the vet is lovely and they do my vaccs. Compared to the other vets they are quite reasonably priced for vaccs - £17.50

As for food I don't have any storage space so just buy stuff from local pet shop.

We have just moved from Preston to North Yorkshire and my husband has actually been going back to our old hay stockists in Preston and filling the car up as we are having trouble getting good hay here.
We use 'Honor Etherington' at 'Vets 4 Pets' in Fulwell, Sunderland as she is very good indeed with rabbits. We had a rabbit with Osteomyellitis in his feet.
They have really modern and up to date medical equipment as well.

:D I know! We're taking over! Robinsons are really great, they do free delivery most places, and they're good at getting stuff ordered in as well

Mollyjoker, we must cross paths on the way to the vets  I went past vets4pets this morning on the bus. Rabbitapril uses them as well apparently they are really good  x

Honor is a friend of mine, fab rabbit vet!!! If Forest Hall is closer to you you have Judith Brown over at First vets, also a rabbit vet and very reasonably priced although she is based between two practices. I discovered another exotic vet actually in Blyth when we had a problem with my sisters guinea pig last week. They were called St Claires...something like that and they have a vet there who is trained especially with exotics and seemed very knowledgable and friendly.

I order my food from vetuk in bulk, and hay I buy from a farm in Lanchester as it's better quality. There is a good hay farm in Boldon, but it's coarse hay so depends what your bun likes!

Thanks for the info everyone! Looks like there are a few of us around now!

Tuckerbunnies - where do you get your hay from in Preston? If its good enough for you to travel from Yorkshire to buy it, then I must try it before I move!

I can't believe I won't be looking after these four:(, How you can take my Fozzie away from me:cry:

Hey fellow Geordie!! welcome home (soon!!)

As Nicola said I use Metrovets, Neil is fab but he's not a rabbit specialist (he admits this!), he knows his stuff and he's treated my two and Nicola's really well but if its specialist treatment then maybe Judith at First Vets in Forest Hall might be best, I know RabbitApril goes there and she has a couple of buns who need specialist treatment, she also makes regular trip to FHB for one bun... Depends where abouts you are planning on moving to, do you have an area in mind?

Riders North in Shiremoor do a good selection of food and also stock megazorb, if you ask Michael he's usually pretty good about orderingstuff in if he hasn't go it too. Nick Robinson at the Grainger Market is fab and he'll also order if you ask too. Then there's Jolleys up near Westerhope just off the A1 which is good for bits too altho the staff aren't always up to much!!

 I thought Neil was a small animal specialist? Does that include rabbits? I have no idea where I've read this but I saw it on a website. Metrovets website?

He does know lots about bunsters which is why I go to him, don't worry I haven't sent you to a dodgy vet!! But if a bunster needs specialist treatment then she would be referred like I was to FHB as he's a lone vet and some ops he won't do cos they need expertise like FHB and poss the lady in Forest Hall. One man can only know so much hun, but trust me, he knows plenty!!

We are going to be renting a place in Wylam until we figure out what I'm doing for working after baby is born. I grew up near Westerhope though so know Jollyes well!

I've heard of Judith before, so maybe that would be go to go see her - how great to have so many fab vets about though!! (Not that my current vets aren't good!)

Kay - so sorry we're leaving you. But you've been fab to me and my buns and now my baby hormones have got the better of me and I'm blubbing away at my desk.... Can the buns come for a holiday while we pack? Did you get my text?

Ah ok so you have somewhere close to get bits from!

Don't know too much about Judith Brown but I've heard good things bout her, I think someone says she's written bits for the RWA magazine... Again tho if you were needing specialist treatment you would be referred like April's Uncle was to FHB.

Not sure about your rabbits problems hun which is why I keep mentioning spcialists, but when I say this I mean complicated surgeries and out of ordinary stuff if you get what I mean. Neil is fantastic for all things I've been to hum with (and for stuff I've asked him about for friends!), the only reason Pye got referred was because of the complications, he even stumped FHB!!

There's a rabbit vet who practices between two branches of Hexham/Corbridge who I've also heard things about, not sure on the Corbridge branch but the Hexham one is Orchard somthing....

Yeh I think Judith is the RWA vet advisor?? Remember seeing her in Rabbiting On magazine i think.

My main bunny problem is jaw abscesses and osteomyellitis so would need a vet who was up to date with all that involves! We're currently on penecillin injections so would need a vet who was ok with "off licence" treatments etc.

I'll go Google the Hexham vets now - thanks so much!

Just googled too! Its either Jill or Linda (at Orchard House vets), whichever on it is has buns of her own and is quite renowned up there. Pye came from Hexham and she gave me free advice a couple of times when I went in panicking being new to the bunny world, was three years ago tho so can only remember short hair and she was nice!!

Could be easier for you to shoot up the A69 but depends how well your buns travel, you're kinda in the middle of all the vets recommended so far!! Call the vets and ask to speak to them, that's how I found Neil, I rang and quizzed him for 20 minutes about all things bunny!! I'm still registered at the other 4 vets I tried too!

Excellent thanks!
I am right in the middle - its about even for travelling time to all places recommended - so I'll be conducting interviews I think!!

Thanks everyone!
