Preventative measures against EC

Last night the vet said that Dizzi and Rascal are too young to have any preventative measures against EC, when I asked how old they have to be he said - in a few months!

Anyone know what age/weight/size they need to be ..... oh and what is this preventative measure that can be given?

Thanks, Jo x

I'd def wait until they have settled a bit more tho and the problem with the Caecotrophs has been sorted.

Yeah I will, thanks ...... just thinking ahead really.

Just read the EC article and blimey its scary stuff isn't it!

EC in Uk Please Please help us.

I have a 5 year old buck. He is my baby. On Weds, he was lethargic and ignored his wife and me - his mum.

He stayed downstairs in his hutch and ate and drank.

I work at 2am and noticed he was downstairs at 4am I moved him upstairs.

On Thurs, I played with him and put him on the grass and he ran and wobbled.
Took him to the vet and he has EC. He has a slight head tilt, weight loss from 2.15 - 2.05kg soiled undercarriage and is wobbly on the legs.

He is being treated with 0.8mls Baytril twice daily and panacur for 28days.

Friday, he could barley walk and looked drunk - the vet said just keep treating him.

Today Sat, he is still wobby on his feet. He tried to clean himself and falls over sometimes.

He hates that he is not fully mobile, he ran from the garage to the garden and then wobbled so stopped.

I have put flystrike medicine on him and his wife and his wife has Panacur too.

I have a medium run and they live in the garage at prsent due to his condition.

I have also bleached, bowls and toys.

Please can anyone explain in lay man's term Ec - how he got it and how to get rid of it.

Moch is due to take day 3 of Panacur and I see little change. I dread every day. I cannot live without Moch; this rabbit is my life.

He is not eating so well - not eating Dry burgess just occassional veg and grass.

Will he get better? Will his condition improve?

Aww bless him :( Does he have any anti-inflammatory medicine, such as metacam. It is generally accepted among exotic specialist vets (rabbits are classed as exotics!) that panacur helps to reduce the numbers of ec organism but it does not treat the effects. Giving anti-inflammatories is therefore thought to be helpful - indeed many would say necessary - in its treatment as it can help to reduce the inflammation caused by the ec. Personally I would suggest tactfully asking your vet for anti-inflammatory medicine as well and asking them to research its use in this circumstance if they're not willing to give you some straight away.

It's a bit difficult to say where any bun gets it from - many may be born with it, getting it from their mum, and it just lies dormant and triggers at some point, sometimes many years, later. The spores are quite active in the soil for a long time too, so if your bun has been anywhere where other rabbits have access to the same ground, they could potentially pick it up there too.

Thoughts on ec are constantly moving on and I know there is now an emerging school of thought which suggests not giving panacur/lapizole as a preventative at all, if there is nothing to suggest that they need it. It's only in the past few years it's been recommended to give it 2-4 times a year and so the concerns about health effects and potential resistance, are starting to emerge.

So sorry to hear your beloved bun is poorly :(
Unfortunately the recovery can take a very long time so keep on fighting. He may get worse before he gets better and possibly start rolling. I hope this doesnt happen, but even if it does DONT GIVE UP HOPE! If he is eating and drinking well and still trying to get around its a sign that he wants to fight it. Good luck, I hope your lovely bun gets better soon xxxxx

EC Mocha

We gave Moch his Panacur this evening. His daddy watched fooball and fed him.

While I studied with his wife.

Moch is eating o.k. I also syringed water into his mouth for hydration.

He was very wobbly this evening and bumping around.

I hate this illness I would gladly endure this illness for him but no one asked us, he just got it.

I know if I losy Moch, I would not want carry one. I love him so much.

EC is a horrible illness and one that can take a long time to recover from.

I too would suggest you speak to your vet about metacam as it helps with the inflamation in the brain that the parasite causes and is also a pain relief.

Keep going with the Panacur a 28 day dose for each bun.

Bleach 9 parts water, one part bleach at days 21 and 28 but remember to rinse well afterwards.

This is often an uphill struggle but DON'T GIVE UP!! I had a number of vets tell me that we had reached the end of the road but Buttercup (who had EC in February) is back to being a happy healthy bun.

PM me if you feel I can help

You will find the advice and support on here is excellent - think about starting your own thread too.

Good luck and let us all know how things are going.

Hi.

How o I start a thread please?

Moch is improving slightly. He sniffed his wife's tail.

He skipped a bout a bit yesterday but fell.

He is learning to clean his face by balancing on onf foot.

His pellets are small and dark brown - marbled with hay and grass.

We love him very much.

Hi Ruth,

How old was Buttercup and what preventative measures would you take to ensure your baby does not get such a despicable illness?

Thanks
Manda

Buttercup first had head tilt which is often a common symptom of EC in November last year and then again a more serious case in February this year. Buttercup is about 4 and a half. She is vaccinated against myxi and VHD but I had never heard of EC (e cuniculi) - but since Buttercup had it, we have given her and her husbun Squirrel an initial dose of panacur and then when we had two new buns - Duck and Parsnip, we again dosed all four with a 28 day treatment. This was on the advice of our super duper rabbit vet who treated Buttercup in February when at least 4 other vets told me to give up and have her put to sleep.

We also bleached the cages and litter trays (and still do) with one part bleach and nine parts water. You then have to rinse thoroughly) I also have a bottle of panacur to the ready should Buttercup have a relapse which I have been told is possible and should be treated ASAP to minmise the damage caused.

Apparantly EC cases are on the increase and also it is believed that many health rabbits carry this parasite which only comes to the fore when the bun's immune system is compromised e.g stress, another illness etc.

Others on here are far more knowledgeable than me but I feel very strongly about spreading the word about EC. Many buns get the illness and are PTS needlessly. We can't totally prevent it but we can lessen the chances of our buns getting it through the bleaching, panacur and if they do get it, making sure that they are treated by a vet quickly with panacur and something like metcam in the right strength and dose.

Hope this helps - hang in there and don't give up on a bun with head tilt / EC.

I would edit your mobile number out of your post !!

Mocha needs to be on treatment for at least 4 weeks so you need to go back to your Vet.

Moch update

So another 4 weeks of treatment for poor Moch - I have medicated Moch with Panacur today and will contact his vet on Monday - his vet only works weekdays. The wife of Moch, Fi is not having treatment. Does she need meds?

I bought them another hutch today even bigger to cheer him up. I do hope he recovers, he is 6 on 23rd Aug. I love him so much better than my :censored:

Does anyone know if when they treated their bun for E.C. it is eradicated first time round?
