  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My lionhead X has a matted bit on her tail . Can my vet shave it for me?

Young Bun
My bun is getting abit mardier this week (Unspayed so it varies) so im struggling to trim her backend back to stop it getting tangled, i can trim the fur but there is a small matt on her tail next to her lady bits that on my own i cant do anything with.

I DID have someone to hold her for me but they are out the picture now. If you are positive and compentant with her shes fine but if you hesitate with her she can bite scratch kick lunge ect. And having someone i cant trust to hold her would be so dangerous so my only option is a vet

Im ringing up first thing tomorrow morning anyway to see if they will but would just like to be prepared of what they will say/do, e.g will she need a 'wiff of gas' as they call it ?

She has a flynet up over her cage, i spot clean her cage everyday & bathe her tail but i know shes @ risk of flystrike if this isnt sorted. I know im a bad bunmum

your not a bad mum at all your taking all precautions in your power your vet should be able to clip up her bum for you no problems the only issue is once she's in the premises she's the vets responsibility so you may not be able to hold her yourself. That will really depend on the vet and how happy they feel allowing you to hols her whilst she's conscious. However if their is a rabbit friendly nurse on the pratice who's confident in handling it will really only take a few moments to do and she shouldn't need any sedation but really it'll depend on the vet and staff members.

in our practice i'm the crazy rabbit nurse and routinely clean rabbit's bottoms conscious as i believe it is less stressful over all than GA and all the risks associated with that. But as long as she's clean she has a fly net etc she should be ok for flystrike.

I have an elderly bun who needs his bum shaving every 2-4 weeks (inbetween me bathing his bum). I hold him while the vet shaves him as it seems to make him much calmer if he can smell me:oops: and snuggle into me. It doesn't take long to do.

It went well. They nurses took her into the back & shaved all around her 'lady bits' and tail.

It took about 25mins and then she brought her back out, she was being really subtle while saying she had been naughty so they couldnt do as much as they wanted, Next time can they have her for the day so they can do it throughout the day :? Not too keen on this idea, im SURE it would stress her more.

Got her back, obviously had a peek and it looks great, theyve done a fab job for £12.
