Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Sorry it's long but please read

Maisy went for her spay on wednesday, was back at the vets thursday morning as she wouldn't eat/poo. We were given Metacam once daily, Zantac twice daily, fibreplex and maxolon three times daily along with syringe feeding every 2 hours. She started to pick up and poo but was still only eating hay and dandilion leaves.

Went back to the vets friday night and she was whisked away there and then for another op as the muscle where she has been spayed had torn/broke away. The wound is twice as big now because the fatty tissue had also broke. This meant all her gut was coming through, it was a hernia. We took her home about an hour after she came around as the vet said we know what we are doing and thought she would be calmer at home with us. She started to drink water and poo as soon as we got her home but carried on with all the meds.

We went back to the vets saturday morning for a top up of the drugs. We as still giving her everything as mentioned above except for the maxolon.
She is eating a decent amount of hay and nibbling on spring greens and dandilions, but has ate no nuggets at all.

How long will this syringe feeding every two hours go on for? Will she ever eat again herself? We are back at the vets monday evening but me and my boyfriend have got to go to work tomorrow.

Thank you.

The fact that she is eating hay, dandelions etc. is a good indication that she wants to eat. Pellets might just be a bit too much for her to eat now.
Imagine going in for such large operations and being expected to eat a curry when you get out.
Is Maisy pooing?

Yep she is pooing now, not as much as usual and they look abit different and are smelly but she is pooing. The vet said to carry on syringe feeding her until she starts eating more and some nuggets. I'm just scared this will carry on for ages.

Personally I would not continue syringe feeding her if she's eating a good amount of hay and Veg.

She is probably not eating her pellets cos she's full due to the syringe feeds ontop of the hay/veg !!

However, I cannot tell you to go against the advice of your Vet. I am just stating what I'd do in the same circumstances.

Thanks for this, I might carry on the syringe feeding like the vet said but just give her the lesser amount that I was advised. This also makes me feel better about tomorrow as I have got to go to work and was worried who would/could feed her but if she carrys on the eat hey/veg I won't be as worried. I think.

Once my rabbits and chinchillas start to eat a bit on their own i always stop syringe feeding as i find that will fill them up so they wont eat much on their own.Hope she is ok x

So I have got to go to work now and im so worried about leaving her. Just given her her pain killer, gut stimulant, fibreplex and sringe food but thats got to last all day! Over night she ate all her greens and I assume hay but still no nuggets.

Hopefully she will spend the day relaxing. Syringe feeding is quite stressful. If she relaxes she will probably want to eat more.A good long sleep will help her feel better too/

Fingers crossed you cpme back to an alert bunny :)

Try leaving some softened pellets aswell as the dry ones. Soak a handful in boiled water and mush them up a bit then allow to cool down.
