  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

5 week old rabbits.

My friend got herself two baby rabbits, The pet shop she brought them from told her they were 8-9 weeks old and dwarf breed which is why they are quite small but they weren't eating the rabbit food given that they were being given so she took them to her auntie who has kept rabbits for years who informed her that they are only around 5 weeks old, To say the least we are disgusted and we will be filing a complaint about the pet shop but what worries us more at the moment is the fact they arent eating rabbit food, They nibble at the hay and grass but just wont take anything, We have no idea what to feed them to help them keep their strength up. They seem okay now, Hopping around and pooing normally but if they don't eat we're worried they could go downhill. Any Advice?

TBH I would say if they are eating hay this is the best thing for them. What a scummy pet shop for letting them go so young and also :censored: people for putting them there in the first place !

Thats okay then :)
She was also wondering weather having them in the hutch at night was okay or weather they should be kept in at night until they're older?

I think I'd get them checked by a vet myself and ask their advice. Perhaps a probiotic to help prevent tummy problems. If they are used to hay then that's fine - anything they are not used to I would introduce extemely slowly after a settling in period.
