  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please anyone!!!
I've spent the last hour and a half reading relevant posts but need to ask a question. please. Can Metacam cause constipation?
We are treating Bandit for EC-- he is on his second 28 day course of panacure as when first stopped, wobbly legs came back. (Vet not very proactive but no choice-- Bandit can't travel far. We didn't get Panacur until I insited something was wrong after his tooth rasp.I later had to ask for Metacam to accompany Panacur.) He has been having 5 drops metacam once a day.
He recently developed eye infection-- red conjunctiva and thickish white gloop in both eyes. Vet prescribed Tiacil 3drops /dayand muttered ' Hope its not Pasturella' but tear ducts not blocked or oozing pus when squeezed. A few days later I asked for Baytril as eye infection not clearing quickly. After 9 days eyes well so we stopped Baytril and Tiacil . 3 days later eye infection back so now onto another course of Tiacil. I also started up the Baytril of which I had a few doses left. Will Baytil stop Pasturella if that is what is causing eye infection??

Earlier in this saga Bandit got a doughy-feeling caecum and listlessness... poops tiny and dry and often strung together. Vet gave shot of Metaproclamide followed by Zantac syrup given by us. He seemed better and cheerier though poops still small. We did the Zantac for about 8 days then stopped. We've also given Fibeplex in between antibiotic and panacur.

He hates being handled and medicated. After the eye infection cleared we had got down to just the panacur, and I phased out the Metacam.(maybe prematurely?)

Now we're back to Panacur, Metacam, Bayril, Tiacil, and Fibreplex probiotic in between antibiotic. His poos are strung together again and very dry. I give syringes of water after meds.

Does longterm Metacam lead to dry poops ? If so should I start up Zantc again??

I have not seen any GI tract problems with longterm Metacam use.

As your Rabbit is unwell that in itself can effect GI tract motility. Also, the Dental problems are no doubt a contributory factor alongside the general stress of all the handling (which is obviously essential)

We cannot advise you re the Zantac as it is a 'Prescription Only' medication and only the Vet treating your Rabbit can do that.

Pasteurella may be involved in the eye infection. Pasteurella is sensitive to enrofloxacin (Baytril) but it is not unusual for the problem to recur once treatment stops.

Stopping and starting any antibiotic is never a good idea as it can lead to abx resistance. It is better to do a long course, a minimum of 14 days in some cases and even as long as 6 weeks.

Dental problems may be involved in the eye infection-ie elongated tooth roots. ETRs can only be diagnosed with skull radiographs and as this would require a GA it is probably not something your Rabbit is able to cope with at the moment.

More about Bandit, Rose and Bruce Lee plus photos

Thankyou Jacks-Jane. I will ask vet to continue Baytril and ask if the Zantac she prescribed recently can be continued.
We love Bandit so much. He must be 9+ Before he came to us he lived in a small hutch. Now he has a 28 by 12foot secure open air pen with an enclosed weather-proofed Bungalow attached by a passageway to a 2 level conservatory. He shares that with Rose and both of them and the new rabbit Bruce Lee have access to a very big grass corral divided into two . We stopped the introductions to the new bunny when Bandit became ill. The problem is we can't disinfect the area, and Bandit and Rose get too stressed when we bring them inside to a small pen.
Rose and Bruce Lee have both had the Panacur 9 day dose.
Pictures coming-- I hope

i did not read all the post,,believe i got the just of the problem,..azithromycin,,zithromax is most effective against pasturella--and it takes time,..do not overdue the metcam-there are draw backs.//.once rabbits show signs of sickness the beast/infection has been at work some time.//.problems sound compound now,,exam-and radiograghs by a exotic specialist for teeth, alignment, spurs, and gitract impaction//may need to hydrate his system for diagnosis,,or even blood work for the correct course of action/antibiotic,,the timer is running so don,t waste the rabbits time.//.lots of grasses,,water,,some pellets,,safe vegy,s...sincerely james waller:love:

Thank you. Anyone else have problems with eye infection not resolving?

Thank you James. Bandit is so freaked by being caught and taken to vet, even the nearest, that we are trying to minimise intervention. It all started with a tooth rasp-- we think the E cuniculi manifested as a result of the stress of that op which in itself went well and Bandit was fine the first couple of days. He gets lots of grass and ad lib exercise. Shebunkin
