Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urine build up?

I was cleaning my female rabbit's bum today and noticed that either side of where the urine exits there is some sort of browny substance. At first I thought it was poo stuck to her but it definatley isn't! It is stuck in creases of the skin and smells quite bad. Is it a urine build up? Is it supposed to be there or should I try and remove it?

This is the first time I have owned a rabbit so I would really appreciate some help for the sake of my bunny :)

Sounds like you are describing her scent glands. These can get a build up of brown matter. You can gently clean the gunk out using a cotton bud dipped in a bit of Vaseline.
Be warned though, the gunk STINKS !!

My girls had that when I got them, I think that it can mean they are too overweight to clean themselves, I could be wrong though, but might be worth double-checking with someone :) and you can just pick them off sometimes, or clean them as Jane has described.

It can't be because she is overweight because she isn't and we see her cleaning there alot but I think it is just stuck too much for her to get it off
