  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How many hours from food in to poo out? (rabbit!)

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
As it says

Damson's diarrheoa (spelling?) is actually caecal pellets gone all sludgy (so to speak) and I am waiting for some real poos to come through to see what they are like.

He ate loads of weeds etc yesterday afternoon, then stopped, then he has had critical care about midday today, and a few nibbles of willow leaves etc this afternoon - when should things start coming do you think??

His tummy is making a lot of loud gurgles.(but not gas pops etc - and vet says feels ok just gurgling as gets started again)

Caecotrophs - I believe 24-72 hours depending on gut motility and floral balance.

Normal solid droppings - 12-24 hours from start to finish I think, but of course it will depend on how empty bun's tummy is and how big bunny is and how long their gut is I guess.... rather like how long is a piece of string :?

If his tum was empty or emptyish and motility is below parr then do not worry just yet, it can take a little longer. Like you I would expect droppings sooner but it doesn't always happen. I have heard of buns in full GI stasis take 7 days to produce droppings at all. I'm sure it won't take Damson that long though :)

(My buns when in good motility will normally pass hard droppings containing hay/grass they ate 6 hours earlier - so it can be much faster)

Yep, it depends a lot of the conditions in the gut so there can be a big difference even in the same bunny depending what it's eaten and how well the gut is working.

Gosh caecal's take a long time!!! The ones coming through now must have formed when he was having his worst reaction to VHd - no wonder he doesn't fancy eating them!!

Yes I had thought 6 hours for normal pellets from the tum - which is why I was worrying . . and just DON"T mention string after what the vet thought caused Mistletoe Snowgoose's bout of blockage/stassis!!!:roll:
