Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit insurance

We have taken out a PetPlan insurance for Jimbles.
They have placed quite a few exclusions on the policy due to his history of statis and molor spurs.

The exclusions are are follows:

Excluding claims resulting from or connected to Eye Disorders,
Excluding claims from or connected to Gastro-Intestinal System Disorders, Excluding claims from or connected to Mouth and Oral Disorders,
Excluding claims resulting from or connected to Facial Abscess.

My question is, is it still worth the £13.76 per month if they will not cover these problems or would it just be better to save £15 per month ourselves?

Aside from treatment for something like a fracture then most 'expensive to treat' things are excluded. Not sure I would bother tbh :?

Does seem alot of exclusions! maybe better to put money aside like you said in Jimbles fund open up his own account

Jane in the case of a fracture what sort of estimate could we be looking at?
I am not sure if it is worth doing either to be honest, if we cancle our policy within 14 days we will get a full refund, so I really do not know what to do.
If we just put money away starting now, then God forbid anything happened in the next month we would not have much saved which is the only thing I am worried about, but I guess if the policy does not cover the main things then I guess it is not worth it. :?

Impossible to say exactly how much treatment for a fracture would cost as it'd depend on what type of fracture and it's location amongst other things. It'd also depend on whether a referal to an Orthopaedic Surgeon/Specialist was needed. That could run into 4 figures.

With all those exclusions I dont think I would keep the Policy going as the things far more likely to happen are all excluded.

I think the most likely treatment buns get would be from stomach, teeth or eye issues so I don't really think it's worth having the policy if it excludes all that :?

When I was looking they seemed to be the only company I could find who insured buns, they are also recommended by our vets.

thats a real tough one :?

Pearl's treatment for her heart was just over £800 so even with so many exclusions id be worried to be without insurance.

im surprised Stasis is listed though because i thought that was pretty much a mystery and not a constant illness, im sure there was someone who once posted if thier bun was stasis free for a set amount of months they could then be covered, worth checking :wave:

I am so sorry to read that you lost your little girl Pearl, and so young. What was wrong with her heart?

I'm excluded for skin conditions due to Princess having mange from the pet shop, and until a yr comes up with her skin problem free then she's excluded, once the yr is up, I've to get my vet to say she's now free of any skin conditions and they'll decide if she's allowed to be unexcluded.

That *might* have been me (I can't remember for sure:oops::oops:) I *think* they said if Roo didn't have a bloat/not eating episode for a year then the exclusion would come off ... the little rascal waited 9 months and then had bellyache again!

Roo is excluded for all the things is post 1 as he's had one dental as well as about 4 bloat episodes. I initially cancelled within the 14 days and then Artie had his bladder issues costing me about £500 :? So I decided to get the others insured, including Roo with all his exclusions. I think he's about £9 a month as quite young. I'm hoping to put some money aside in the next year or so and ditch the insurance after I've got savings... but the other side to that is if I did decide to re-insure at some point they might have racked up other exclusions by then - it's a very difficult decision but I'm basing my decision on the fact that i've got a really good vet who will offer treatment rather than do nothing, so I want to be able to see that treatment through... and not worry about the cost.

Ok thankyou so much for all your advise.
I have been thinking and have decided that it is probably worth keeping the insurance in case of any unforseen problems, hopefully we will never have to claim but I guess you can never say never.
I am also going to try and put some money by each month into a Jimby fund so we have a little cusion in case of another problem with his tum tum or teeth.

she had an enlarged heart. i think it was a birth defect but she was 2 when it became heart failure.

her brother and sister died before her so i think the whole litter was destined not to be here. im convinced they were inbreeds.. went to the rescue because the petshop wouldnt buy the litter and them being a pretty rare breed..hmmmmm

Hmm that does sound suspishious.
Poor babies.

I'm going to get Bart insured, I think it's going to have to be Petplan, however I am slightly annoyed they will not cover dental!

I think you've probably made the right decision keeping it on, i just remember what the vet said to me - which is what prompted me to get it - as i was also of the opinion i might be better sticking a tenner a month to one side and saving it, is that it can cost £300+ a night for inpatient intensive treatment and i thought, hmm i'd have to save for a couple of years to get that and even then it would only be one nights worth of fees, so i took it out and i'm so glad i did as 3 weeks later Joe needed £1800 worth of treatment! I know there seems alot of exclusions there but unfortunately there are still plenty of other things that could go wrong so better to be safe than sorry ;)

I've just insured my Pebbles with PetPlan. I'd been unsure whether to go ahead, but my vet advised it's probably best to have it, just in case.

I was insured myself with PetPlan under their Riders policy, I've cancelled that so it's only costing £5.00/month more (£10.85 in total) and as I'm a new customer, it's 12 months for the price of 10.

I'd be happy to pay the monthly fee and she not have any illnesses, than not pay and she has problems (which knowing my luck would happen ) So this is my idea of preventing her being poorly :D
