  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How do I...

(Sorry if this is in wrong section )

Just heard that a lot of you seem to check your rabbits bums, how do I do this with a rabbit that won't really let you handle her, she'll scrabble her way off (I have numerous scars to prove this ) what I've done the past few days is when she's had a run and flopped resting, I lift her tail up  she'll then move bless her, I feel so mean for disturbing her

Do you mean check her bum for poops/flystrike? If so, you could always sneak up behind her with a mirror and slip it underneath for a look.

Sit bunny on my lap on a chair/sofa and tip bunny backwards into my tummy so bun is sitting in a C shape, back and head supported by my tummy, bottom supported by my legs. I would avoid tipping bun in your lap away from you as this puts bun into an almost lying position and it's not far off 'trancing' which is very stressful for bun.
Or you can stand bun up on their hind legs with their feet firmly on a flat surface and lean over and examine their bottom this way - this is how my vet does it - but I find in a home environment bun is less cooperative with this technique.

It sounds to me that you just need to be a bit firmer and more confident when handling your bun, this can be done gently too. I always say to people that you are likely to hurt bun more by being too tentative rather than firm, simply because if bun struggles they may hurt themselves more. Perhaps you could ask your vet or a vet nurse to show you next time you go?

She struggles whatever I do with her, I have learnt if I've to pick her up instead of letting her jump straight out I am a bit more tough and will not easily let her (I don't hold her against her will though either), but Ive tried all ways of looking  and she's having none of it, she even struggled when the nurse tried to look, she likes to have all 4 paws firmly on the ground

Jimby is the same, if not worse! He is reluctant to be handled- even the vets have trouble!
What we do is feel his bum, he is a good lad and lets me do this, he will even lift his bum  so I can get access to it properly but obviously this does not allow me to actually SEE his bum.

see Princess won't even let me do that, she's very much a lady as in she won't let me near her bum, she'll jump round

think I need to be stricter with her

I find it can be helpful to wear rubber gloves it gives a 'stickier' grip, either the surgical thin ones or marigolds. They don't seem to be able to slip through your hands quite so easily :)
