Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

what treatment to use for fleas?

New Kit
Hi,
Quick question
I have a baby rabbit - about 8 weeks old, and I am slighly suspicious of her itching a bit, although I can't see anything in her fur.

When my guinea pigs were itchy I gave them Ivermectin treatment for mites/lice etc, but does anyone know if this kills fleas also?

Does anyone recommend a particular brand? I know about Xeno, is that ok?

Are there any ingredients I should stay well away from? and is she too young/small to have any kind of treatment?

thanks

Personally I would not want to be using any antiparasitic medication on such a young Rabbit without first consulting a Vet to confirm that the Rabbit does actually have fleas,

Ivermectin is a nasty chemical and should not be used unneccesarily

Ditto to Jane's post above, but just to add, ivermectin isn't supposed to be terribly effective on fleas, it's better for mites. The only suitable licensed product for fleas on rabbits is Advantage - you will need to get this from your vet. Cat/dog flea treatments are toxic to rabbits. Please check with your vet first anyway. :)

There are several other things that can cause itching and ivermectin is not very effective against fleas anyway. Best to take her to a vet so they can check her skin and fur, using a microscope if needed, and prescribe something that is safe and effective. Don't be tempted to use cat or dog treatments such as frontline as they can be fatal to rabbits.
I hope your itchy bunny feels more comfortable soon :)

Spooky cross posting  I should be cleaning out the bunnies now anyway!
