  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

abscess from rabbit bite

Can anyone give advice about abscesses? There is a rabbit that I have had my eye on for some time in P@H adoption place, which has been getting treatment for some time for an abscess caused by a bite from another rabbit. The abscess was operated on (huge wound, poor little soul) and has recurred 3 times. It's been getting regular injections for it and even had manuka honey put on it to help clear it. It seems that it may be clearing now, but if it stays away for a week, will it never come back? I don't have any experience of abcesses.

Rabbit abscesses can be extremely difficult to treat and recurrence is common. The best person to ask re this particular Rabbit's prognosis is the Vet who has been treating him/her :)

Thanks. I have spoken in length to the person in the pet shop who has been looking after him/her and they assured me once it was away it would stay away, but I wanted to check for myself. Might be better to insist on speaking to the vet then.

The rabbit is gorgeous :love::love:, but has had a really rough time and I want to know what I am letting myself in for.

That's a perfectly reasonable request.

Sorry, another question, just out of interest really. If an abscess goes away for a week or so, does that mean it will stay away (if caused through a bite), or could it still appear again?
