Well C says that she is still not convinced its Uroliths :?
She said that an U/S rather than Xray would have more chance of showing up abnormalities if they are in their very early stages. But as C does not have U/S equipment Victor has to go elsewhere to get it done.

Also, C said that *if* uroliths were found and surgery was needed she would not feel OK about 'digging around in his kidneys with U/S availability during the op'

So I believe she may either ask the other Vet if she is able to operate (should it be necessary) or if not it'd be a referal which I doubt I can afford

I have to pay for 36 Myxi vaccs this week and a referal is not going to cost less than 400, money I just dont have

I feel sick with worry now

When Damson had his kidney stones he did not 'tuck up' like that - he curled round on that side - sort of nursing the area so to speak.

Also his were found by x-ray and were not able to be interpreted on ultrasound (though they did say they saw something odd - but then had to x-ray to confirm stones).

They did think that with kidney stones it was 'easier' to take the kidney out than have to dig around in it for the stone - but i guess that depends on how well the other kidney works.

When he was finally operated on Damson's affected kidney was shrunken and abnormal.

It took him about a week to be back to normal and he is now putting on weight and better than he has been in ages:D

PS US at our vets was not that much - about 100 I think - I could check if you like.

I take it you mean without? I guess even if its not uroliths/nephroliths, some form of diagnostic imaging wil hopefully give more information. Would a nephrectomy not be easier and cheaper, if the problem is isolated to one kidney? may not then need a referral?

Yes, sorry typo, I meant without.

I think surgical options would depend on where the urolith(s) are :?

I have been waiting for another episode so as I can get a better photo of how his abdomen looks to show C. She examined him for ages this morning and there was absolutely nothing abnormal and certainly no areas of tenderness.

C really does doubt that its uroliths but what else could it be to cause the symptoms :? He has not had another episode for over 24 hours. This is day 3 on Baytril- any connection I wonder :?

If you decide to specialise in Rabbits remember that you probably need to be a detective as much as a scientist !!

Having read that parsnipbun's Damson's kidney stones were more evident on Xray than on U/S I am now even more unsure as to what to do. Victor got himself into such a state on a 6 minute car journey to C this morning. It'll take about 40 mins to get to the other Vet............ :?

Gawd, my brain hurts !!

We have had 2 rabbits with kidney stones. Both have shown up really clearly on x-rays :)

It does also depend WHICH kidney it is I seem to recall - for some reason to do with placement and liver etc the left will show up better than the right :?

Damson's stone was in the right kidney and took 4 xray attempts after the US to track it down exactly. We then saw it clearly once a piece had fragmented off and gone travelling down the ureter (urrgggghhhhh - had forgotten all about the fact that they did not get this bit out - now worried again:(:(:roll:).

PS have had two other rabbits with kidney stones and these showed up easily - they were both granulated EC related stones - different to Damsons.

Both my vet and the Bristol vet school apparently gave success of nephrectomies as 'moderate' - but they may have been being extra cautious because Damson is so elderly
