  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help sorry having complete brain melt here james has been sick for wee while now see previous post had him at rabbit medicine practice and did blood sample to test for e-cuniculi it's completely negative (which apparently is rare) however his kidneys aren't working great and he still has some neurological type problems although full spinal x-rays were also done and their is nothing to see. he's still not eating and i am now totally confused i've to nurse him over weekend and take him for further tests on monday!
have been warned his prognosis is incredibly poor anyone know of other neurological issues other than EC and spinal damage?

please send vibes also for him

Poor little draling! Heaps of vibes!

Is he a dental bun? My vet has just told me that the repeated anesthetics Ginger has had are damaging his organs. Is that a possibility with James?

he is a dental bun my new vet said same thing hoppit although she said it's unusual because all his bloods including his liver function is normal she hasn't ruled out maybe a bleed on the brain or some other issue he's to go back monday for full neuro exam but things are not looking good it's so frustrating because apart from his uncoordination and unwillingness to eat he's happy he's coping well to the deficits he has in his front legs and is still hopping around quite well i'm dreading losing him i lost my other bun not that long ago i just can't cope with losing him to

Have they considered a middle ear infection disrupting his balance?
Is he on anti-inflammatory medication and/or antibiotics?
I'm confused... his bloods are normal but his kidneys aren't working properly? Surely his bloods would show this?
Sorry to read your bun is so poorly.

There are many things that can cause neurological disturbance but without an expensive MRI it can be hard to be certain exactly what that is. Buns can have vascular episodes such as strokes, haemorrhages, or lesions/tumours or degenerative disorders etc just like us humans but these are all very much worse case scenarios and really do require a vet to diagnose... something straightforward like an ear infection could be responsible for his symptoms? I do hope your bun feels better soon x

he's on metacam and septrin has had his ears checked no infection present he has bunny insurance would this cover an MRI?

It might do if your vet felt it was appropriate but there aren't many clinics that have one I believe - it is quite specialist equipment for animals. I think the Royal College has one. :?

Middle ear infection would not necessarily show up just by looking in the ears - the middle ear is very deep indeed and there are major nerves that run around this area where inflammation of certain ones can cause bun to lose his balance. I don't know how effective septrin is for this type of infection as I have no experience and i'm afraid I also do not know what diagnostics are required for a middle ear infection - I just know it can affect balance from a human medicine perspective. Sorry I can be of no further help in this respect. Might be worth mentioning the possibility to your vet though just to check it has been ruled out?
Really hope bun feels better soon. :)

Metacam should help whatever the problem is though :)

he's being treated at the bush vet in edinburgh so mri would be on option i think he seems to be eating bit better today so i am still hopeful

just want to say a huge thanks to all of you who have helped and supported me over the past few days however james is still not improving so unfortunately if no marked improvement by tomorrow i'm going to have him helped to the bridge as his quality of life is deteriorating rapidly and as much as i want to know whats wrong and have a diagnoses i don't want him to suffer for my peace of mind.

But thank you all for your support i'm still hoping for a miracle but doubt it is going to arrive

well as you know had rubbish weekend where james got so much worse no quality of life etc and was basically miserable was at a loss as what to do and had decided it was time to help him the the bridge and i was devasted however on monday morning a certain someone was coming to meet me at the entrance to his run having scoffed all his food passed normal poo and everything he is much improved head tilt and neuro signs are still their but he is coping well with them he is still not 100% but he continues to battle for me so i will continue to battle for him as raine and prettylupin mentioned an ear infection i discussed this with the vet also saying i did not want any further investigations and the course of action we have decided is to try steroids incase of in inflammation (either spine or ears) and an antibiotic (baytril) to try and clear the snuffles etc

thank you all again for the help and those vibes that you sent must be pretty strong :)
