  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

e-cuniculi

hi james my dental bun hasn't recovered that well from his dental this time he has some vague symptoms possibly e-cuniculi related or i think they are but the vets at my practice are not very savvy and are querying dental pain.

he's had all teeth rasped back i know this as i was present when it was done (i'm a SVN) however my favourite vet is on maternity and i'm struggling to trust the others He has a slight head tilt hind limb weakness and incontinence which are all in my mind saying e-cuniculi by vet is adamant its spinal injury but as he's to ill to GA just now she wants to prescribe metacam as drug of choice however i have started panacur against her advice.

just a bit of help please i am by no means an expert but i do feel i know more than most at my practice about rabbits purely as i have kept them for 10 years plus now. I'm worried i've made bad decision. I'm nearly 100% sure it's not pain he is reasonably happy bit lethargic not eating great but not to bad just worried about using metacam in a rabbit who's already battling some vague illness.

any ideas reassurance etc would be great

Can you seek a second opinion from a different Veterinary Practice ?

Metacam is an important part of the treatment of EC anyway (along with Fenbendazole) as it is important to minimise the inflammatory response to erupting EC spores. It is that inflammatory response which causes clinical symptoms and longterm cellular damage.

have asked for referral to specialist exotic practice in fife but Vet refuses to do so as she is certain it's spinal and in here words i'm being awkward i'm all confused really james is always wormed regularly i.e 4 times yearly at the dose of 9 days at a time so was unsure how he has e-cuniculi in first place but his symptoms all seem to fit he's been on antibiotics septrin and baytril for snuffles and fibreplex and a whole lot of other drugs as well as injectable metacam. Metacam would be needed if defo e-cuniculi but to be honest i'm not sure it is it would all fit but i'm worried i might be missing the bigger picture especially as his litter mate died of malformed kidneys (had post mortem done) i'm just worried that the vet is dismissing me when i know he's not just in pain their is something else wrong

sorry long post just worried sick

You can test for EC from a blood sample so don't need to GA unless he is a particularly difficult bun! Would your vet be open to testing? - you could suggest that you want to check for other problems as well as the spinal issue so you're not directly contradicting them!
You are well within your rights to go for a second opinion and your original vet does not necessarily need to know (though it is polite to notify them).

I'm concerned that my Ginger Bun might have EC, as he hasn't recovered from his last dental either, and isn't eating properly. He does seem to be in pain though - does that happen with EC? He's having bloods done tomorrow but should I start a course of panicur tonight anyway, just in case?

I personally think it's time for you to fine a new vet. If your vet is unwilling to refer you and she wont do the blood work when you ask, something seems strange here. A vet should do what's best for the rabbit, and to me, you vet sounds as though she doesn't want you taking your business elsewhere. If you can find a rabbit savvy vet in your area, I would suggest making the appointment without the referral.

finally got referred to a specalist with much issue doing blood work today although has warned me the result can sometimes be misleading as it will test positive if he's had it previously she's a bit concerned about the amount he's drinking and thart the e-cuniculi may have progressed to his kidneys so running bloods for his kidney function also.

vibes for my bunny please he is eating better and bit more himself since i started the panacur but he's still noy out of danger yet but i'm much more happy with this vet at least she listened when i said james was drinking loads of water and didn't just say and i quote "it's been warm today" even though it was freezing up here like my last vet .

I am hoping and praying james will pull through waiting on blood results before we plan any further treatment although if his kidney's are compromised i'm not sure what this will mean. :(
