    Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

    You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hay wrapped round foot.

I almost DIED when I saw this today.THANK GOD Lily is ok....and I freed her with no problems.No broken skin or other injuries.
Has this ever happened to anyone?????

She had been dancing and it had wrapped itself round her foot....I had to cut it with scissors.
If I hadnt have noticed it,it would have got really tight.

Yes we have had problems int he past withthis with a few of our disabled bunnies. they can loose the circulation in their legs if they are not careful :(

Best thing to do is to chop it with scissors so their are no long strands :)

I use a soft paper bedding for my ferrets....and that stuff can wrap itself round kits....
One lerans new stuff everyday....:shock::oops:

This happened to my Tubby. He got fruity and was digging his hay and spinning round, and managed to wrap both his back feet up in the hay (by this time he was nearly 12, so not as spritely as he might once have been and had recovered from a front right broken leg and a back leg broken leg). I found him like that, unable to move and it did cut off his circulation, but thankfully I freed him quick enough for him to get it back and regain all movement (and he also hadn't injured himself like Jane's Martha). We did as Liz says here and from then on we cut up his hay so even with the best digging he couldn't get anything wrapped around him.

One of Tree's buns was nearly hurt from hay that had become tangled up. It made me look at my hay. I notice that sometimes the hay comes out in really long intertwined pieces and, because of Tree, I always cut these strands up shorter.

Glad your bunny is okay.

My very old Nethie (Eric) use to get hay stuck round his ankle, I ended up cuting his hay up so it didn't happen again:D
