Does the whole world have "it's just a rabbit" syndrome???

Alpha Buck
Sorry for the rant but need to get it off my chest.
Having just lost one rabbit and discovered another may have a different long term illness I have discovered how weird I appear to others in how I deal with these things.
How most people think I'm nuts to keep a rabbit alive, give medicine twice daily and regular dentals, and pay hundreds of pounds (over the last 2 years) to give him the best life possible when I could save myself all this by just putting him down:evil:,. And when I grieve for him when he's gone, get upset, mark the fact that he lived, I'm being dramatic because he's only a rabbit. A cat ot dog people would understand . . .but not a rabbit. And having gone through all this and tell people about the other sick rabbit knowing how upset I have been they still say well can't you PTS:evil: and look on with sympathy to the poor mad rabbit woman about to do it all again.
Even some vets, and other rabbit owners who would not have have made the decisions I have made, even about the most minor of things.
I am now very fortunate to have a fab vet who specialises in and values rabbits, and who fights the same battle by the sounds of it even with those who profess to have the needs of all pets at heart.
Even OH doesn't really understand although he does try.
Thanks goodness for RU.
I am by no means perfect in my rabbit care and am learning all the time, but it is heartening to know there are also others out there who do their best for the animals in their care even if they are "only Rabbits"!!!!
Rant over:oops:

It's frustrating, isn't it? Some people just don't understand the relationship you have with a loved animal. Rabbits are just as loving and intelligent as cats and dogs! I cry for every pet when they are ill or pass away, or even if i find a dead wild animal - some people laugh at me for it, but it's the way I am.

I cried buckets when some of the rabbits and guinea pigs where I worked last year died, particularly as the owners wouldn't pay for any vets fees:evil:

I don't think most people appreciate just what character and personality rabbits have if they are allowed to show it.

People think I'm totally bonkers but I actually don't give a stuff....

:wave:It's not a rant, I often feel the same way.

The phrases, "It's only a rabbit" and, "Oh, it's ill, well put it down and get a new one" are very common.

I think it might come from rabbits' recent history of being food animals.:(

Rabbits often get:
  • Tiny hutches.
  • Poor food.
  • Left out in the cold.
  • Neglected at the bottom of the garden until they die.

It doesn't usually get to me at all but with recent events it just has. Emotions running high I guess.

I'm lucky, I've not had to come across this generally, although, I do admit, that some people where I volunteer view the rabbits as 'lesser', but I think those people just don't know enough.

My rabbits seem to be far more complicated to look after than the dog!!! I think those of you who volunteer or run rescues do a brilliant job as there's so much to know about and look out for.

ive had that today lol. talking about Alvin at the rescue and the bonding... a lad i work with really dont get rabbits... and another bloke thinks all animals are a chore rather than a joy.

and i dont care.. i really dont.. i enjoy the shocked faces when i talk about my bunnies :D:D:D:D:D

i like being different and its thier loss they havent discovered the love or bunnies :love::love::love::love:

Yep everyone thinks im mad too, they all take the mick out of me being part of RU too

I get told that wild animals shouldn't be kept in cages all the time, where Ilive. Which is :censored: because they aren't wild, they are domestic rabbits, they aren't in a cage, they are in a shed with a run, and they are being well looked after.

I'm really lucky as it doesn't seem to happen to me -

You are obviously more picky than the rest of us about who you spend time with. Think I should try that a bit more often.

Some people think I'm mad too as I care for all my pets the same way (rabbits, rats and hamster) and get the worst response when I say that I took my rat for some surgery they needed or have to go shopping as we are out of kale their fave veg.

I find it very sad that Britains 3rd most popular pet doesn't get at least half the respect of the 1st and 2nd most popular. Its only people like us, who really understand rabbits that give them the respect they deserve.

If I had £1 for every time I've heard "It's just a rabbit" .....

haha that gets a smirk from the blokes too.. but they are more concerned by my virtual pet addiction more than my real pet one :lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'm not sure - I think to be honest (and I am being honest here and not at all being snobby or anything so please don't get at me) the fact that I am a fairly respected academic - not to mention a strident and outspoken person - kind of keeps that sort of thing in check.
No-one is going to accuse me of being 'silly' for example - except perhaps on RU:lol::lol::lol:

I just don't talk about how worried I get when he's ill, except here, & to 2 friends who also have rabbits. I think that only people who have lived with buns know what amazing creatures they are.
Sadly it's not only bunnies that are disposable these days.

I agree. Plus I think once people see your set-up and how happy all of your buns are then I think they see why you have your views. There are still a few ignorant academic types though, I meet them daily in my job .
