  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Unwell can anyone help please

Hi my name is Nicole and I'm 13 years old. My rabbit is 9 weeks old. She's been great until this morning. She is listless, stretching a lot and sitting all scrunched up. She is drinking a lot of water but she isn't interested in food. She did get into a neighbours garden in the weekend and I'm worried she may have eaten something that she shouldn't have. Does anyone have any ideas. The vet is closed now and I don't have any money to take her to the vet until mum gets paid next friday.

Your rabbit needs to see a vet tonight! It sounds like she's in pain.:(
Please don't wait until Friday; it will be too late! :(

 well done for coming to this forum and for looking to help your baby rabbit!

Unfortunately im not very experienced in this but There are lots of experienced people here that will help you - please keep checking back to see what they say..

Good Luck and i hope your rabbit is ok..

just a few thoughts - what have you been feeding her on??

Have you tried dandelion leaves or herbs to tempt her to eat??

if you and your mum explained to the vet then they would proberly let you pay on friday as this is a emergency. :)

Rabiits go down hill really quickly.
Your bunny really needs to see a vet regarding very soon.
Maybe your mum can come to some agreement with the vet regarding payment.
Hope all goes well xx

vets are usually very helpful

If you ring them and explain, I am sure they will try to help you. In the meantime, ask around your friends and see what vets they have found helpful. If your own vet doesn't help, you may be able to find another that will. Depending where you live, there might be a bunny specialist vet near you, which would be better still. People on here will know about that...

not sure if this will help but someone in work had an ill dog but couldnt afford to take it to the vets however they ended up taking him to the pdsa as arent they a charity and can help pay some of the vet bills :)

I agree with everything thats been said, your bunny needs to see a vet as soon as possible, sitting hunched up suggests she's in pain and stretching suggests she may have gas in her tummy.A vet needs to have a look and see if they can see a cause and give her some pain relief and something to get her insides working again.Bunnies cant just stop eating for a few days, its important they always have food in their tummies and a bunny thats in pain wont eat.A lot of us here have had this happen but its important to see a vet as soon as possible.Good luck!!

Baby rabbits are very sensitive to tummy problems i'm afraid, and all rabbits deteriorate very quickly when poorly, so much so that even just waiting until morning can be too long. Most vets have an out of hours emergency service. If you ring the usual phone no. for your vet there should be instructions on how to get hold of a vet in an emergency. You may be able to discuss bunny over the phone to get a better idea of whether or not you need to go tonight - it is expensive out of hours but it may save your bunny if she is very ill, which i'm afriad it does sound like she could be - rabbits really must not stop eating for more than a few hours.

Baby rabbits are very susceptible to hypothermia and shock. If you can bring her inside tonight and wrap her up warm in a carry cage with a blanket and a heat pad/hot water bottle filled with warm water (make sure she does not chew rubber - so put it in a pillow case for example). She must not get too hot either - sick rabbits can not respond to hot and cold properly like we do.
Perhaps you could ask your mum to have a look at what has been written on your thread and maybe you could persuade her to read this article also:

Some vets are willing to come to an arrangement on payment at a later date.
One of my rabbits frequently gets these symptoms and we have made many trips to the vets at midnight and later over the years - it has saved his life.
I hope your bunny will be ok. Good luck :)

Thankyou

Thakyou for everyones advise and support about Bugsy! :D Ive managed to see a vet today, and they are not quite sure what it is, however they think its a chest infection? They have given her some injections and she isnt 100% but she is now eating again!!! YAY :)

Glad your little one is ok, and glad you got to the vets... did they give you any medicine/pain relief to give to her? and does she have to go back for a check up?

I know how you feel as one of mine had to have a dash to the vets last week
