Non-sedative painkiller?

Hi guys, am waiting to hear from vet about when I can get Angel.

I know the painkillers they were giving her yesterday were making her very snoozy and so she wasn't eating, so they cut the dose down to enable her to eat.

Is there a good painkiller I can ask if she is having that doesn't make her snoozy?

Thanks! :)

The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory class of painkillers (NSAID) are non-drowsy in general for most. These are drugs such as meloxicam/metacam, carprofen, ibuprofen etc.
Vetergesic which is an opiod (buprenorphine) does have the drowsiness side-effect, which is more significant in certain buns. One of mine doesn't tolerate it very well and does better with a lower dose of opiate and higher dose of NSAID - this is something you will need to discuss with your vet.
Opiates also have a negative effect on gut motility over time and have a shorter half life in general so although essential for severe pain in the acute phase, if bun is struggling to stay awake to eat you would, IMO be better off tailing this drug off and upping the NSAID instead - provided your vet thinks appropriate. :)

A good article on pain:http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=500

Totally pointless response and no help at all, so I apologise in advance...

but I read the thread title as "Non-seductive painkiller"!:lol::lol:

I hope Angel is feeling better soon.
