  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does my male rabbit need to be neutred to get him a companion?

Will he fight or?
Its just looking at the bad comments about neutring i dont think i want to do it.. plus are there any health benefits from neutring?
Thanks

There are lots of people far more qualified to comment on this than me but basically the answer is yes. Your bun will bond more easily if neutured (best to bond with a female if poss) and it will reduce the risk of him fighting/injuring himself/other buns :)

Definately yes. Two unneutered males will almost certainly fight and even if you put him with a spayed female he will just pester her and she will get annoyed.

Neutering is not all bad. I dropped two of my boys off at 8:30 this morning and they are already awake and eating. I also have five other neutered buns and have never had any complications. I know its scary putting your rabbit through an op but IMO the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Also for the boys it is a far less an invasive operation than for the girls.

yes i would advise males to be neutered, i have 5males all neutered, they are all paired up with females except one pair which are bonded brothers. I would strongly recommend you having him neutered and then after a month look for a suitable female for him to bond with. They usually bond very easily and after you wait a month there is no chance of the female getting pregnant. Hope that helps you!! :)

reasons for not neutering,
too old
has a life threatening risk under GA
Or you want to breed

pros,
calmer
better behaviour
no unwanted litters
better toilet training,
easier to bond with another,
and less chance of cancers

pros to me far outway the risks,

It important to find a vet whos confident to do the op, those that advise against say to me they are not confident in the operation

if you havent got a sibling for your bun, id be more inclinded for the opposite sex as a partner, and if hes already showing signs of maturing wait 6 weeks min for hormones to subside,
