Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vets - Loughborough / Leicester

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could recommend any vets in the Loughborough/Leicester area that are rabbit savvy?

We took our buns to get their vacs the other day and both buns have got bald patches under their chins. Neither are dribbling and they seem to be eating ok. He checked their teeth and said they seemed fine and just told us to put extra wooden blocks in to keep them chewing as they could just be feeling uncomfortable with their teeth.

The vet seemed ok but not exceptional in his knowledge of rabbits. Does anybody have any reccomendations?

Hi there, it would be worth you asking Jill at Honeybunnies, she uses one in Leicester but I'm not sure of the name.

Where did you go? I use the one in coalville,i know chine house in sielby is supposed to be good

Gamston would be a little too far unfortunately but thank you anyway. Sileby and coalville doable though.

What are your opinions on what the vet said? Do you think he could/should have explored further options into the baldness or are we just being overprotective parents?

Baldness on the chin would usually indicate dental problems, but it would be quite unusual for both rabbits to get this problem at the same time unless they are related and it's a genetic problem.

Do they seem to have any trouble eating? i.e. only eating certain foods, dropping bits of food, chewing when they haven't got anything in their mouths?

Personally I'd recommend a different vet...rabbits can't wear down their teeth by chewing on wooden blocks...they actually need to be chewing hay and/or grass to wear their teeth down.

We have found King Richard's Vet Centre in Leicester to be good and knowledgeable about rabbits.

I 'think' that Honeybunnies have also mentioned using them.

I can recommend Helen at Oadby Vets4Pets (which is actually not in Oadby but in Wigston!). She's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about rabbits, something of a rarity in Leicester.

If you need a truly rabbit savvy vet I find it's worth the drive to see Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic in Duston, Northampton. Really need to get him to move his clinic to Leicester!
