Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

I got my girl spayed a few weeks ago and I was the same as you totally stressed and really worried for her but thankfully everything went smoothly.

Here is a link to some photo's of her after the op and photo's of her wound...

From the advice I was given about girl bunnies prone to getting cancer and things like that and also to give my girl the chance to have a husbun pushed me towards getting the op and I'm glad I did. She has calmed down alot to.

I had alot of Faith in the vet who carried out the op as he has never lost a bun in ten years so I knew he would do all he could to make it go ok.

You should ask about for a rabbit savvy vet who is used to doing these kind of things and you should get advice from them.
At the end of the day nobody can make the decision but yourself.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do xx

It is always best to get your bunny spayed if they are healthy :)

She may become very hormonal and have behavioural problems as she gets older, and with you only being 14 she may become difficult to handle. Spaying would make her much calmer.

Also old bunnies often get cancer if they are not spayed. We only take in old bunnies at our sanctuary and have already lost 3 to cancer this year because their previous owners didn;t get them done :(

Obviously there are risks with every operation, but the beniefits of neutering far out weigh any risks :)

I know but its a really big decison im only 14 lol.. id feel so bad =[
Shes getting her Myxy jab today :)

You should maybe talk to your parents for advie with you being so young.
It's alot to think about but in the end it will be worth it if it cuts down the risk of your bun getting cancer.

My girl is getting her jags today aswell :? Should be fun!! NOT x

I agree, the benefits definitely outweigh the risks. There is something like an 80% risk of an unspayed bunny developing uterine cancer by the age of 2. It is crazy statistics. Likewise, I was also in a similar position to you a few weeks ago. I was a nervous wreck. I think though that I knew it had to be done - because if she was not spayed there is the risk of uterine cancer, behavioural problems and she wouldn't be be able to buddy up with another bun very well. Knowing this, all you can do is find a really good vet that specialises in small animals like rabbits and has a good success rate in spays.

I am definitely glad that I got Charlee done. She was a bit shaky for the first day but since then she came along in bounding leaps!

Okay well ive just come back from the vets and found out Bugsy is a boy :O He had his Myxy injection but the vet said Bugsy doesent need the vhd injection. So is the operation for a boy to be neutred just as bad as being spayed?

The operation is simpler as it's just a snip but your boy will still need to go under GA which carries its own risks. It's the best thing to do for your bun though, he will be much happier in the long run.

I think you may need to thinking about changing your vet though as your bun will need the VHD injection too. Ideally this should be done in about 2 weeks time.

I think it can be good to have him neutered if he's a bit grumpy, as it usually calms them down and makes them friendlier! However it can be risky, I have lost a bun being done, and I wouldn't do it again unless it was a vert who really knew about rabbits.

As for VHD, my vet doesn't recommend it either.

there is always a small risk with any op. just make sure you find a good rabbit vet. the benefits far outweigh the risks so i would definitely get your boy neutered.

i would also always vaccinate against vhd aswell.

The first vet I ever seen didn't recommend any vaccinations I found this hard to beleive, when my cousin recommended another vet who is mega rabbit savvy he suggested to get them done.
However when I went tonight the vet I saw said she doesn't have to get it as she is a house bunny but if I wanted to go ahead with it then it wouldn't do any harm.
Booked in to get the other one in 2 weeks time x

 I wonder why vets are advising against VHD??? - I would definetly get this done. Have you got a more bunny savvy vet near you that you could take him to? Did he say why he didnt need it? It can be a horrible horrible outcome if they get it!! See link below about the 2 vaccinations...

As for the neutering of your boy it is a much simpler operation than the girls spay, Oreo had his and he came back completely normal as if nothing had been done!!:lol:

No i dont think there is a rabbit vet around here.. Thanks for all your replies!
If you ask the forum they will be able to let you know about local (to you) rabbit vets.
Its really such a relief taking your bun to a vet who knows what they are doing with rabbits.
