  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stubborn Dentals..............

I am making progress with Petie's dental abscess (a month of depocillin and marbocyl, daily/twice daily manuka and a lot of incising and massage with my patient bun swaddled).I feel I really am winning but any other suggestions? I'm planning long term antibiotics(he's already on pro-biotics) and figure if it fills up again I'll have to have it re-opened but any other thoughts/ideas. I don't really have a local bun specialist (130 miles each way to current bun specialist) so suggestions for that welcome also.
Thanks in advance xxx:p

A Few Qs....

Have you had an x-ray done? If so, does it show whether the infection is in the bone?

Has the vet been able to remove the problem tooth/teeth? (it's the best way to get rid of the source of infection, but not always possible if the tooth isn't loose or the jaw bone is brittle)

Is Petie eating normally, and does he seem active and happy?

Most importantly Petie hasn't missed a single meal with this whole saga!!!!He has eaten anything and everything put in front of him and will graze for hours on the lawn given the chance. He hasn't had an XR-is a GA required? A vet who I trust very much feels given he's SO well in himself another GA+ radical surgery may not be the best plan-he's 8 no with an arthritic back and pelvis but otherwise very well. If it's any indication he is constantly chasing his wifie probably more than any other Spring so I'm thinking with both of them neutered if he's that frisky he must be doing well?????

I guess Petie's age is a major factor in any treatment. Hopefully the antibiotics will keep the infection at bay. You may find it swells up again if the underlying problem wasn't able to be sorted, but you can only keep on with the antibiotics and hope for the best really.

With my jaw abscess bunnies, I've found that they only appear poorly when the infection is active or they need dental work, so keep an eye out on Petie and take him to the vets if he seems out of sorts at all.

An x-ray is a good idea, and a GA is often not required, but if Petie is a wriggler they may not have been able to make him lie still enough for one

I picked it up pretty quickly even if the treatment he had was a bit average so maybe that's why his appetite has always been good?
I've been managing it open the last 4-5 weeks and seems to be drying up again-very little discharge and mauka going in nicely. I'm sure he'ld sit still for an XR if handled correctly-I'm currently swaddling him to massage his abscess empty and injecting the manuka(after a big dose of meloxicam) and he doesn't wriggle at all. If he's handled nicely he is THE most patient patient. The vet and nurses that have looked after him have all fallen in love with him because he's such a gentle boy!!!!
I'll probably try a local bun expert (from recommendations on here) so may have the XR chat with them then.
He's such a little trouper, his big brown eyes fill me with love-how soft am I???

Mine has only had X-ray under GA as they say they can't keep them still enough (and he is very placid). Would be worth you ringing round though in advance of any appointments.
