Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Matted foot fur

Amy.

Alpha Buck
I've noticed in the last few days that Leo's fur is getting a little matted on his back feet- he has no incisors, so obviously he can't sort this out himself very easily. He does have quite fluffy back feet anyway, which isn't great. They aren't matted with poo, just where the fur is beginning to moult, it is ending up getting tangled together in what I can only describe as dreadlocks. Of course, being such an awkward place it isn't easy to attempt to brush or comb it out, so we've managed to cut a few off, but obviously this isn't really 'safe'. Is there any easy ways to untangled the fur and remove it? Eg, would somehow washing them help? I want to sort this out before the summer hits and the flies arrive ideally. Thanks

Washing it will just make it felt up more.
I use clippers on a 'thinning' setting and carefully thin out the felts :)

As Jane said, washing will make it worse. I had this on a bun and she got wrapped up on a towel with the relevant foot exposed, and tucked under my arm. That way I cut the worst of the matts off and the rest could be brushed out.
It takes a fair bit of patience, I have a brush like this http://www.petsathome.com/webapp/wc...s&productCode=18854&catalogId=10601&langId=-1 but it's a dog one so a bit bigger. The pins in it are fairly soft and flexible but great for grooming. I alternate this with a comb and it teases it out.
