  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Other animals. We have a dog!!!!!!!! Please help. The dog has no physical contact with the rabbits but they are now in the house in the spare room.

In theory yes.
It is transmitted via the infected Rabbit's urine so unless the Dog has access to urine contaminated areas cross infection is highly unlikely.

Microsporidian parasites, particularly Encephalitozoon cuniculi, cause fatal infections in puppies and asymptomatic infections in adult dogs. Therefore, dogs are a possible unrecognized reservoir of infection and spore shedding that may put immunocompromised humans at risk for infection with these parasites. Seven species of triatomine bugs that are capable of serving as vectors for the zoonotic protozoan parasite,

Say that last week the rabbits were on the decking where the dog goes. Not sure if they did a wee. The dog goes on the decking everyday!!!! Could she get it on her paws????

Ask your vet if it's worth giving your dog a dose of Panacur too, it has a different use in dogs but surely it would help prevent E.C. in them too?

I think the implication is that an ADULT Dog *might* become a vector of EC-ie capable of passing it on without any apparent ill effects for the dog.

I agree that speaking with your Vet re a precautionary course of treatment for your Dog would be a good idea.

It is obviously very important to minimise the risk of your Rabbits ingesting any urine contaminated hay etc, so strict hygeine measures need to be applied.

Your Rabbit's environment should be bleach cleaned (10% bleach solution then rinse well with boiling water) on days 21 and 28 of Fenbendazole (Panacur/Lapizole) treatment.

A non steroidal anti-inflammatory eg Metacam is also an ESSENTIAL part of the treatment of 'active' EC. This is because it is important to try to minimise the inflammatory response to erupting EC spores. It is the inflammatory response that causes clinical symptoms and longterm cellular damage.
