  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spare depocillin

I have a lovely big old boy rabbit who's going to be on long term antibiotics by injection as long as he's with me (he's 8 this year).Because I'm the only person who gets depocillin from my vet I will have 60+ml of it left from the bottle each month. Does anyone know of a Wirral based rabbit/animal rescue who may be able to use the rest? I'll be happy to take the unopened bottle to the rescue and draw off the 40ml I'll use and leave the rest with them just so they know I'm not trying to poison homeless bunnies!!!!!!!!:(
Ideas?

Unfortunately it is illegal for you to supply the Depocillin to anyone else. It is a POM and can only be given to the Rabbit for whom it has been prescribed.

The only way around it would be if a Rescue/client with a Bun on Depocillin used the same Vet as you and your Vet authorised the agreement.

I think depocillin should last longer than a month if it's in a rubber topped bottle

You could always contact rescues to ask them if they want it

As Jane said, it's not strictly legal to share POMs, but in reality there's no harm in doing so in cases like this.

Have read through details on the 100ml bottle and it definitely lasts 28 days! My local vet I got it from has never used it before so they have no-one else on it. (I took him to a bun specialist to get things sorted who uses loads of the stuff) There's a bun specialist I have subsequently foubd in Liverpool who may be able to provide me what I need rather than the 100ml when I'll only get through 20ml a month. I'll take him to the bunny vet in 3 weeks or so once he's responding again (hopefully). They do alot of rab rescue work so may well be able to help me out. Not bothered about the money, just seems so wasteful!!!!! TTFN
