Gut Stasis or something else?

Hi everyone,

My rabbit was fine this morning, running round and eating etc. This afternoon I found him sitting asleep in his litter box which is not him at all (he's an indoor bun and he usually just does his business in his box then hops off). Few hours later he was still there and was cold to touch, not moving, breathing slow, hadn't eaten or drank so I took him straight to the vets (not my usual one because I wouldn't have got there in time). Anyhow this vet didn't seem to know what was wrong - said there was no blockages, so gave him 3 injections, metacam, baytril and maxalon? Anyhow 3 hours later he's still the same and I have to take him back in the morning. Does anyone know what I can do to help get him more comfortable or what this may be? I'll be taking him to my rabbit specialist vet instead first thing, but until then???

i would be syringing water every few hours to keep him from becoming dehydrated and tempting him with every favourite treat i could find.

people recommend syringing recovery sachets that vets usually give out but i personally have never been successful :oops:

if he is still poorly tomorrow i think you should be insisting on hospitilisation and put on a drip as well as loads more pain relief. at the very least some to bring home and an injection of fluids under the skin. my vets were not keen to do this until i cried alot and they did it daily for 3 days before Alvin started to eat properly after a really bad stasis episode.

sending loads and loads of vibes xxxxx

I would get him onto a heatpad.
As Donna says, syringing him some cooled boiled water, little and often, will help his hydration.

I hope that he will show signs of improvement soon.

does he seem any warmer? if not, do you have a heatpad or even hot water bottle you could use for him?

Well I just syringed him a little water, now he's gone and hidden up the corner  Tried all his fav things to eat but he's not eaten any, have left them down just in case. He's still really cold, we've got the heating on and will be leaving it on for him tonight, husbands gone to dig out heatpads for him. I have got metacam here but don't know how often I can give it because of what he's had at vets.

Sorry about this everyone but he's cold to touch but has just gone and lay on the cold tiled kitchen floor? Forgot to say earlier there was little squelchy noises coming from his tummy too.

ive found that gripe water or infacol and chasing about helps alvin when hes got a bad tummy. he hates me for it but it shifts gas if thats what it is.

if your lucky youll be able to get a full dripper of infacol into him a ml i think, again im never very successful alvin takes the syringes and throws them :(
i try for some every two hours. if i do it every hour Alvin gets really peed off

I'd def give the infacol a go, I normally gave Pye 1ml about every hour or so, maybe alternate infacol one hour, cooled boiled water next. Def see if ypu can get him moving as I found this helped a gassy tum. Last Time Pye had wind I picked him up and gave him a cuddle and that made him ****

I also give my stasis prone rabbit cooled peppermint tea to drink along with her infacol. if you can get back to the vet at some point ask to buy some fibreplex which is a probiotic for rabbits. It seems to work really well for my Honey who gets stasis in the winter at times.

To temp Honey to eat I always try dandilion or fresh corriander. Also try grating carrot or apple for him too, I think Honey went for this first last time she had problems.

I give 1ml to start with and then 0.5ml every hour.

However I AM NOT A VET this is just personal experience.

It also only works with gas not stasis with no gas.

Fluids really are very important. If you are sure he has not got a blockage (unlikely if he has now swelled up), then try syringing tepid fruit juice (apple juice etc) diluted with water.

Well he's a lot brighter this morning. Has done a wee and had some wet poops, drank all his water iun the night, is more alert and moving abit more. Still hadn't eaten though apart from a tiny bit of biscuit I gave him.

oh phew :D the vet will get him sorted today then. so relieved hes brighter. has he had it before? dont panic too much if it takes a few days to get him back to full health... longest Alvin has given me a stasis nightmare was 12 days

The only time he's refused to eat was after having his teeth done and that lasted for a week but it's never happened without a reason before so that's what worried me. He has just eaten some kale too yay! Thanks for your help last night.
