Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC? Im not totally convinced

Young Bun
One of our buns started having strange symptoms last Friday night. She was off her food (ate normally in the morning) but wouldnt eat in the evening.

The following day we took her to the vet who said her pasturella had flaired up. She has a history of sneezing, snuffles but is generally OK. Better than Ok infact, full of beans.

Sunday things got worse. She kept falling over and was walking against the wall to keep straight.

We looked it up and the thing is she only has trouble keeping balance. No head tilt, no eye flicking or rolling. When she falls over she has real trouble getting back up.

She cant drink out of her bottle, just the water bowl right next to her, same for food, she only eats whats right next to her.

We took her to the vet again who said "Looks like EC, you might want to consider... you know". No f'ing way! We had to convince him to take action. So we now have panacur for he suspected EC, ear drops for a possible ear infection and antibiotics also for the possible infection and the pasturella.

What other options do we have? There used to be a really good bunny savvy vet there but he doesnt seem to be around at the moment.

She seems fine. When you see her sitting in the corner its like any other day. Shes not wobbling, looks like she normally does until she walks.

The only other thing I notice is when I lift her right ear to give her a stroke she falls over. Lift the other and shes fine.

We have real trouble giving her oral meds. They just sit there, she wont swallow. So might have to use banana or see if we can get injection meds.

this could be an inner ear infection wich can be hard to spot you would need decent antibiotics to combat teis, it could also be a stroke, or ec if ec a 28day course of pannacur is a must (do this just to be sure) my bet is on a middle ear infection or posisbly a build up of wax in the ear causing balence issues, hoever she wil laslo need pain relief. x

whereabouts are you - if you post a plea for a bunny savvy vet giving your location you might get some advice for somewhere else to go.

Were in Luton, Bedfordshire so a bunny savvy vet would be nice. Saw that there is a Cat and Bunny clinic in Northampton which isnt too far.

Funny you say about the wax. The vet did look in her ears and say he could see a buildup of wax and gave us eardrops for it but still thought it was EC and that she wouldnt make it :censored:

Shes currently on Panacur (1 measure), Baytril (1ml), ear drops, some powder for the blocked nose (cant remember it right now). Shes just had a bite to eat and a groom.

Pretty much ruled out stroke as her face is normal, infact shes normal until she starts moving or you lift up her ear. Also, the ear with the waxy buildup is also the one that causes her to fall over if you lift it.

Does sound like an inner ear infection to me. Atleast she's on antibiotics, so I hope all goes well. SO glad you didn't have he PTS. I'd definatly try and get her to a rabbit savvy vet for a second opinion if I were you.

I'd definatley get a recommendation to a good bunny vet - Hugo's there is in leighton buzzard - try her.

Were off to see The Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton tomorrow. We spoke to them and they suggested it sounds more like an ear infection given the wobble when you lift her ear and the waxy buildup inside and that EC is unlikely.

She just been munching her lunch and making her usual mess with a slide of banana so she seems in good spirits. Just when she tries to go for a walk she falls over.

That other bloody vet put her down on the floor in his clinic and she ran around, rolling all over the place because she couldnt get a grip. She does the same when shes well on the laminate in our house so not a really good test. Doing it when shes dizzy certainly looks bad.

Its almost funny when she does it on the carpet at home, she falls over, regains herbalance and looks like shes thinking "WTF just happend!"

bless her poor thing glad you getting a second opinion my thoughts are with infection of inner ear...xxx

Right, saw Simon Maddocks today at the Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton. He really knows his stuff.

It is possibly EC as she has some eye flicking although shes not too bad. Shes eating and grooming herself although not really drinking so were getting that down her.

Shes now on penicillin and a painkiller, we get to inject the penicillin ourselves which is great as she really wouldnt take Baytril orally.

She seems much better after some pain meds and has really tucked into her hay again. He says we should let her out and about the house so she can get her bearings and adjust to her new way of seeing the world.

It is possible she has some damage if it is EC but she seems in good spirits and happily tucks into her banana.

Totally different opinion from the local vet who wrote her off as soon as he took a look at her.
