Honey has a sore hock :o( Help please

Hugbut

Mama Doe
I've just found a small sore on Honey's hock :( I have no experience with this so advice on what to do would be very appreciated. It's about half the size of a 5 pence piece, the skin is not broken, it looks more like a pinky coloured callous or blister. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort & I only discovered it by chance. What should I do? What could have caused it - I feel like a rubbish bunny mum atm :(

:wave:There have been quite a few "sore hock" questions recently plus suggested treatments.

May I suggest doing a search on the forum for "hock" (if you have not already done this). I am not a vet so I do not know, but there are several people on here with "hock-knowledge".

Hope this helps a little and that your bun gets better soon.:(

1stly it isn't your fault!!
I'm finding it difficult to understand why just 1 hock is affected.
You will know that sore hocks are pressure sores or caused by fur wear by skidding on carpet & are commoner in larger heavier buns.
I wonder if she's been thumping a lot- although tbh my bun uses both feet equally to thump.
If she hasn't been thumping it implies that she's preferentially weight bearing on 1 hock. So I'd be inclined to get her checked over by a good bunny vet.

The principals of treatment are to ensure that the nails are well trimmed, & soft bedding - some folk use deep hay, others use vetbed, & some use blankets where the bun lies down.

If the skin is intact, & there is no overlying callous/hard skin, many bunny specialist vets now advise that creams be avoided, because they flatten the surrounding fur which is acting as a cushion.

Thank you for your post

It's funny you should mention thumping - she's been staying at my parent's house because we've had builders in & my Mum said she's been thumping alot (something she rarely does at home) Perhaps it's her preferred thumping foot that has been affected? Her nails are trimmed reguarly, she's not over weight and her bedding consists of vetbed on one half of her cage and newspaper & hay on the other side - she is out for most of the day on lino/laminate but she has access to her cage and I always put extra vetbed on the floor incase she wants to lie down...so it would make sense?
She's coming home tommorrow so hopefully she'll stop thumping and it will heal but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Yes I agree that thumping is the most likely reason for her hock sore.
It's honestly best left alone & just checked very regularly, for callous & skin breakdown. It gets better quickly when caused by thumping as soon as the thumping stops.:D

Bunnies vary alot with fur growth. My boy has a bald ear after his GA for a dental until he has a fur growth spurt just before the next moult ie don't panic if everything seems static at 1st.;) I'm hoping that honey will start to grow fur as soon as she gets home. Good luck
