  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing For Months

My Dutch Pipkin has been on baytril now since the begining of Jan.
Shes been sneezing & it sometimes sound like shes hacking up something nasty when she coughs (the cough is rare)
Vet says she has a respiratory tract infection. Im not so sure. I know this sort of infection can take ages to clear up but I also thought it was infectious. Her husbun nor any of my other buns have caught it. Theyre all indoor buns.
Could it be a foreign body up her nose? Im sure it started when I bought rubbish hay from the supermarket, it was so dusty. They now only have dust free hay.
Shes not unwell, still eating & doing everything exactly how she's all done things.

Any ideas would be welcome. Vet is considering flushing out her tear ducts if sneezing hasnt stopped in 3 weeks time. Her teeth are fine.

I'd take her for a second opinon at a local rabbit specialist.

I had two like this as babies. They treated for respritory infection but the only similarity in the two was the sneezing, poor poppy was cover in snot despite me constantly bathing her and coughing load, Cloudy was just sneezing, no discharge.

Turns out cloudy just has a sensitive nose and poppy has another illness (forget what it is now but obviusly unrelated to your bun) But only found this out after she died from the bunny specialist!!

Your always entitled to a second opinion:)

How can you actually find a rabbit specialist? Ive always been impressed with my vet as he always seems so up to date with the latest techniques, hes always answered all my questions correctly & I know hes attended a vet conference/training on rabbits before Xmas, but a second opinion seems to be the way to go

I asked on here tbh (I don't have one anywhere near me!!) But also try your area and vets on google and yell to get a list of vebsites and look to see if anyone specialises in exotic and small animals and then call the explain the situation.

Sometimes you just need someone elses eyes to see something which has been overlooked!! have you spoken to your vet to voice your conserns?

Has anyone else on here had similar treatment who can advise??

Dustyrabbit Im in Watford & use the Avenue Veterinary clinic. I have a Nethie who needs her teeth cut every 6 weeks & my vet is great with her. Whereabouts are you?

My Rainbow's been sneezing for a while now. He's had 2 courses on antibiotics (to see if it was an infection), a steroid injection (to see if it was an allergy) and he's going in for skull xrays tomorrow to check for teeth root elongation

Teeth root elongation is also another possiblity with Pip but apart from the sneezing shes showing no other signs of teeth probs or eye problem

I just outside watford, in Abobts Langley I use Park Veterinary Centre (Mr Starr of preferably Mel - who may be on Maternity leave at present) and Guy Carter at Medivet St Albans Road, Watford. I don't think I know Avenue - unless it's that Gaskill guy?

Edited to add - Sorry it's Maskill isn't it - just looked it up. The only rabbit owner I know who uses him does so because he's cheaper but she says he doesn't know much about rabbits and she relies on the Nurses more.

I think I would try Guy Carter at Medivet.

bart is doing something similar to this, he's sneezing a bit (started yesterday actually) and has a bit of a snotty nose?

we're just wondering if he is sniffing loads of dust or something? he has full run of the living room when we're at home and seems to be obsessed with sniffing EVERYTHING all of the time!

dust free hay... bit lost! vets?

still weeing, pooping and running about like a loon just fine, and eating like it is going out of fashion!

If there is any snot at all i'd go straight to the vet. You also need to bathe his nose as when they clean it and get snott on their paws and then that gets in their eyes and they can get eye infections!

Rabbits can go up and down quickly so i'd get them straight in there just to be safe (from past experience!)
