bertie is very poorly with a lump under his toe/SAW VET TODAY.

sorry I didn't see it either, how did the appointment go? sending vibes to bertie x

thank you all..hes still in dire need of get well vibes...or at least pain killing ones:(

brita said i had got to it soo early he stands a good chance.....

he has mild infection in BOTH ears:(
He has the same toe on each front paw infected but the right is wayyy worse.
she said to give him baytril for a week and special ear drops....and to go back in a week.
she said its lucky its the outside toes as they arent as weight bearing as the others so are are not as missed when amputated.:(

he is in a lot of pain again tonight..and metacam isnt working..so guess id better ring her in morning......
hes snapped and bitten and dig the furnitue and weed everywhere...the pains too much sometimes bless him.

hes eating a bit of his pellets and hay cookies but thats it. Hes having to have metaclopramide syrup twice a day....and two 40ml syringe fulls of critical care. hes pooping a bit but also soft cecals excess......his pain is responsible for slowing his gut down..but brita said it was still moving just very slowly.

hes had my lappy adaptor...again......so its back to this weeny netbook of nikkis.....

he even attacked salem on salems bed on my bed settee:shock::(

his feet arent bandaged as theres no horrific open wounds..and we dont need him eating bandages!

i feel so sorry for him but after two hours of him attacking everything esp me.....i do lose my temper..and have to shout NO DONT BITE ME....then plop him on the floor:oops:

he was in a good mood this afternoon..even ran up to greet my brother who hes only seen twice before!! thats old bertie..like a dog:lol:
Bertie just flipped a few hours later...and couldnt be calmed...each painful step is the cause.

poor old thing...we will not know anymore till next week..or if he gets worse.

if his toe/toes need amputating.he has mrsa in his nose.....im worrying in advance..cant help it.

Give me a shout if you need/want me to come up to Emsworth with you....am nearly always available

Poor boy :( Sending loads and loads of vibes for him

I'm so sorry to hear this purple bumble.
Everything crossed for Bertie.
Didn't Bertie have Staph aureus as well as pastuerella with his recent snuffles? If I'm right, he may need an additional AB to cover for the Staph. which can spread in the blood stream & form abscesses too.

Three of my buns which had staph aureus got abscesses in their feet.Honey got away with having her toe amputated,Maizey got both paws covered in abscesses and constant ear infections:cry:.Poor Barley after months of treatment under the supervision of Langford had to have her leg amputated.Bugsy got ill with an ear infection, which eventually killed him and the stress of loosing Bugsy bought an abscess out on Barlies remaining front paw,I couldnt put her through anymore:cry:
Baytril will not touch this infection.Maybe it would be worth asking your vet to ring Langford and talk to Richard Saunders, they have a bunny clinic every Wednesday.I have come to the conclusion this is something some of the bigger bunnies Carry.
I wish you all the luck in the world with Bertie xxxx

I am very sorry to hear of Berties latest problems

I agree that Baytril is highly unlikely to make much impact on his severe infection. Personally I would be pushing the Vet for Depocillin Injections and Metronidazole. For pain control I would ask the Vet about maximum dose Metacam (0.6mg/kg/24 hours-can be given in 12 hourly divided doses) aswell as an opiate such as Vetergesic.

The infection seems to be in his bloodstream now given the multiple issues of URTI, Otitis and abscesses and aggressive abx administration via the most effective route is something I would really think to be essential. Personally I would be contacting the Vet again this morning to discuss this as Bertie really does appear to be very poorly

What ear drops is he on ?

i had a really rough night and was a bit of a mess this morning.....i have given bertie his meds as prescribed....
his ear drops are called otomax and theyre gentamicin based.

i agree pain relief is not enough..as he proved last night when he kept attacking us.

hes quieter now and ive given him his new litter tray where he doesnt have to jump up and in and out so much...cost me £12.50 from dee millen but oh sooo worth it bless him....

i have just got off the phone this minute..bertie is seeing claire at the vets tomorrow morning at 11am.
i havent even bothered ringing our own vets as berties seeing the other vets as no appointments are available monday mronings at ours as we only have one vet and one surgery..emsworth has several...AND nurses.
costs me double the taxi fare of our local vets..but hey...he is worth every single penny.

thumps...indeed he has mrsa colonization in his nose:?

maizey..omg i remember reading some of your posts now...
thank you for the tip..i will take number with me. but specialist vet is john chitty in andover.....bertie saw him with his eye ulcer.

jane.....i read the three of youre posts and immediately rang the vets.

sadly i cant make it over there this evening....taxi etc...and im not fit either..berties seeming to be stable right now..i found the doggy sized metacam and gave him that.

gem hun the best vet i haqvre seen there so far is actually from the bognor branch....janis...he was great...and gave bertie shoit of opiate pain killer and metacam together that day along with metaclop and zantac. and he said brethaing probs poss heart see our own vet..and the next day bertie had snot blow out...and had swabs done day after..when the snow hit!

wish me luck with bertie....

btw if he was in as much pain as he was yesterday..id have gone even if id have had to walk all those miles and miles.
if you dont drive or dont have the cash to get a cab then youre screwed.
cashpoints will be tackled enroute.

i have just got off the phone this minute..bertie is seeing claire at the vets tomorrow morning at 11am.

 You stole my appointment!! I've just finished on the phone too, Claire's fully booked, having to see Britta tomorrow afternoon :lol:

Fingers crossed Claire can help him

thank you folks...he needs it xx

Gem..... dont blame me for nicking yer slot..there was 10.30 or 11 am...i plead not guilty :p

ooh whos seeing brita?

thank you:wave:

well bertie saw claire this morning...and amazingly the lumps are responding or seem to be responding to baytril!!! mind you the abcess he had under his chin a few years back did too!!
HOWEVER when the course has finished he is seeing her again..and if its still rampant then a new regime will begin. But at the moment she wants to finish the course as hes responding.
The gentamicin ear drops are working too..HUGE relief!!!

his guts are a little gassy but least theyre working along with the metaclop syrup and the critical care feeds and him nibbling his pellets and a little hay.
The pain relief she said i was to up his metacam.she said bunnies can process metacam 3 times faster than a dog. So im to give him his dog metacam and to treat him as if he was a 15 to 20 even 30kg in one day...i split it in 2.
she wants to see how the metacam goes as with some buns its been enough....he doesnt need any more meds in his system i guess.
As she said it all depends on how he gets on.

Hes not as fractious over his litter tray since he got the huge low fronted one....

him living on lino doesnt help...but then again buns on carpets get carpet burns...my first house bun did! She said its normally buns who sit on there own wee a lot who she sees with this problem the most.
she also said as my buns had already been in contatc with bertie..they can share the grass outside in the warmer weather..after hes been out there.
I did ask about the mrsa but she didnt think it was his sytem..just the pasturella..andshe wasnt concerend about the mrsa..thats three vets now that have said that:shock:

im stunned..this seems to be too good to be true:?
im hoping its good news all the way for bertie..he deserves it.
mind you another nurse fell for him whilst she held him up for claire....soft old fluff has that effect as hes so laid back.;)
