  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

at how much more happy and energetic Angel is since changing their bedding , the shavings must have been really affecting her breathing and making her tired all the time :(,

so glad I had that gut feeling that something just wasn't right, as she had been like that ever since I got her home ( she had shavings in the pet shop ), so I had never know her to be any different to notice something was wrong,

and we have decided that her and Buffy are definitely older than the pet shop said, there is no way they are only 10 weeks just now,

I remember a thread on here saying someone had conducted an experiment that basically said buns hated being on shavings, I'll be honest I didn't know this until about 3 years ago when I got back into bunny keeping! Well done for noticing your bun's needs :) and welcome to the forum

yeah when I got her home, I knew there was something just not right at all, her breathing sounded really strange, and someone on an another forum mentioned it may be the shavings, thanks :D, I've been mainly lurking for a few weeks but think I'll be starting to post more often now :)

I feel bad that I use shavings in the outdoor hutch, after reading about poss breathing problems on here. I always keep them scrupulously clean though - does that affect it?

Well I kept Angel & Buffy's hutch clean, and her breathing was still bad,

I have to say we used to use shavings when we first got buns, because we thought that's what you were supposed to use.

Ours just have newspaper covered in hay now in all their beds & litter trays which they love - nothing like having a poo & eating hay ;) Not only is it better for them than shavings, it's not half as messy in the house :)

Welcome btw  love your siggy - your bunnies are gorgeous

Doesn't it work out blinkin' expensive though?! I think I'll look into changing the boy's bedding now...
