Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Hypoglycaemia in rabbits.

Has anybody ever had any dealings with hypoglycaemia in rabbits?

I am having a few problems with my 5 month old bunny. Just after Christmas he was diagnosed with e.c after collapsing and losing all coordination for 24hrs. He was treated accordingly with panacur and made a full recovery, he was totally symptomless by about the 4th day of his treatment.

In January he collapsed again, and again his coordination went and his temperature plummeted. He was treated with panacur and as before he was totally symptomless by the 4th day of treatment.

On sunday evening when I returned from work I noticed he was looking dull and was a little shaky on his feet. He was otherwise bright and ate well. I again started panacur. An hour later I found him totally collapsed, his temperature had dropped, he was cold to touch and he was totally unable to support his own weight and he had no muscle tone at all.

I rang my vet today and also spoke to another vet from a different practice about little Phoenix. Both of them agreed that there was no point in continuing panacur as the likelyhood of it being e.c again was very slim as there is nothing that he could have reinfected himself from. The possibility of hypoglycaemia was touched upon by both vets.

I then offered Phoenix a few slices of apple and within an hour he was much brighter and was able to sit upright. I have been giving him some apple every couple of hours and he seems to be getting brighter and his coordination is coming back. He is able to hop now, although he is still a bit wobbly.

Has anyone had any experience with hypoglycaemia before? He will be going to the vets on monday, the vets are happy with me to continue with the supportive care at home.

Sorry for such a long post!!

Hi, I hope your bun is feeling better today.
I have never experienced this myself, but it does sound like it could be hypoglycaemia as the apple is obviously helping. Could it be a diabetes type thing?
Keep us informed and good luck

xx

Wee Phoenix is much much better this morning, he was in and out of his bed all night and munching on his hay. He is still a bit wobbly when he hops but miles better than how he was.

I am still giving him slices of apple a few times a day to be sure. But I am amazed at how quickly he has improved. Fingers crossed he continues to improve! It really is looking more like he had a hypoglycaemic episode.
