Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hunched-teeth grind-metacam-drugs masking the problem?

please any advice for polly bun and my sanity

very poorly, better after metacam and eating but no poo, IS THE METACAM MASKING HOW SHE FEELS??? cant leave her until i know

what will happen when the pain killer wears off and she still hasnt pooed?
all the food shes eaten since she has had metacam may just block her up even more.

she ran around for 2 hours, then acted out of character, hunched, grinding teeth, cant poo, wont touch food when normally manic about it, etc. gave her some metacam after she was very poorly for an hour, 30 mins later started to move, running around, ate some food, but no poo.

i dont want her to be in pain during the night and die. suppose i will have to sit in the garden all night, damn freezing

Aww, I'm sorry to hear this. If I were you I'd get her to the vets, as they'll be able to treat the cause. How much has she eaten today? Do you have any recovery diet? What symptoms is she showing, besides her obvious pain?

thank you

just got other half to take watch. she has done 5 very tiny poos. eating lots. ive never been so relieved to see something - a poo! they were warm and wet so definately new ones.

i have number for emergency vet, should i still call them i dont know yet. seems like her normal self. thought i would stay out for another couple of hours, see how she is. thenget up early about half five and see how she is.

god i worry about them all the time. its always when you least expect it. cant take the strain sometimes and think they would be better off somewhere else. just having a glass of wine to warm up

wil spend the day with her tomorrow too to look for any discomfort. believe me, any sign and she will be at the vets asap. just wondering whether to call the vets tonight, she seems great, binkies and silly business

she had 0.4ml of metacam, not sure how long this takes to wear off? i am no bunny care expert, but after looking at threads on here about stasis it says give pain relief. my indoor bun just had his knackers cut off and they said 0.4 ml a day and he only small, so i knew that would be fine for her, she big bun.

thank you all for your replies, i need support at times like this ( actually all the time would be good, ha ha )

she was completely normal. eating fine. it happened all of a sudden when i was about to put them in. i watch them and know them so well that i knew immediately she was poorly. she was lying down and she never does this when out. normally crazy. god knows what would have happened if id put them in half an hour earlier. what is recovery diet?

Def always get her to the vet in these situations as she may need other drugs to stimulate the gut into working again. The pain meds will help of course, because she feels well enough to eat which is essential. But like you say, IF she has a blockage forming it may make it worse. How is she today?

Hoping bunny is back to normal today. Does she eat a lot of hay? Have you seen her eat it? What pellet is she on? What and how much veg do you feed? Has she had her teeth checked?

Bunnies will stop eating if in pain.

I can't see her age. Is she bonded with the male bun?

This is recovery diet. It's a special dried powder made especially for small animals. It's designed to cover all of your bun's nutritional requirements for the day. If your bun is refusing to eat it's a good idea to syringe feed them with some of this, every few hours. It keeps the gut moving which is vitally important for a bun, as they can die from stasis. I'd get the vet to demonstrate how to do it if I were you so you'll be ready if you ever have to use t in the future.

I wonder whether your girlie might have dental problems? As rabbits teeth grow constantly, they often get sharp little 'spurs' which can hurt their mouths. Unfortunately the only way to treat this is to have a 'dental' done under GA. For some reason which I'll never understand, a bun can be very poorly with their teeth one day, but seem fine again the next! The spurs haven't gone anywhere and will be causing further damage, but I guess a rabbit's instinct is to pretend that everything is fine - they'd be a very easy target for predators if they let the pain show. If nothing is done the tongue and cheeks might ulcerate, and become infected, and your rabbit will almost certainly loose weight.

If I were you I'd still get your little one checked by the vet, to rule out anything like this. In my experience stasis occurs for a reason which needs addressing. Good luck, and keep us updated!

thanks for your replies everyone. saw the vet who says she seems perfectly fine. her teeth are fine (had them checked only a couple of weeks ago as well), stomach, bottom etc. i now have more metacam and some stimulant (zentac? its in the car), in case it happens again. hes a rabbit specialist which is very handy.

rabbits arent simple to look after!! they are fine one minute and not the next. might get some sleep tonight............

she is bonded with vincent, and he is fine luckily.
