The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. GP- Post eye removal - Recurring infection

Hi,

I need a little advice if possible. This is a question about one of my guinea pigs but hopefully I can still get some advice. To cut a long story short, back in November Indie had to have her eye removed, we then had a traumatic six weeks where the socket became infected and had to be operated on again. It was touch and go as to whether she would survive as the stitched wound kept opening up.

The vets decided to leave the wound slightly open to allow for the fluid inside to drain out and eventually it all seemed to be fine, the wound closed up and the hair has grown back...apart from a tiny little hole which didnt close up.

Several times since then, her eye gets a little bit infected. The last time I took her the vet seemed happy that it was only a surface infection and that the empty socket wasnt full of infection and so she was prescribed a 5 day course of antibiotics. However, 3 weeks on from then, it looks like the infection has returned again. I think it must be because there is still a very small opening so bacteria is getting in.

I have another vets appointment tonight but was wondering if anyone has experienced this before and have any suggestions for us. I am worried that if the infection keeps returning then the vet might suggest putting her to sleep.

(She is fine in herself, eating loads, running around etc) Thanks.

I'm sorry you are having this problem with your guinea pig.

I have GP's but have no experience of this sort of thing I'm afraid.

There are a number of GP experts on here but you could also check out the guinea pig forum - Guinea Lynx which I know Char-x (one of our GP experts recommends).

I would alter the title of your post to something that lets people know its GP related and after eye removal.

I think a few rabbits on here have sadly had eyes removed so you could do a search and see what that brings up for you.

Hopefully someone will be along soon to help you more.

I have no advice for piggys but Frank (bunny) had a similar problem after his eye removal and in the end it was just perseverence with 2 different antibiotics. Touch wood he has been infection free for about a month now :)

My toffee had his eye removed, and didnt get any infections etc, so cant really offer any advice...

Could they not stitch the final little hole up? clear up the infection and then stitch it up? otherwise, by the sounds of it, its not healing by itself and will continue to get infected :(

Lots of vibes for your gp xx
