Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Back legs weak

I posted something on Ling Jais weakening legs before and a request on some info on the condition and taking metacam for it here previously:

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=216314

Basically I am worried that he feels the stiffness in his legs and is at time dragging himself around as opposed to walking or bouncing. When he gets amorous with his toy rabbit he tends to fall off it to one side as he can't hold himself up. I don't want his back legs to get any worse and we often massge him all the way to his back and he really enjoys it as he settles his chin on my slipper to relax into it. Is there anything else I can do to improve his condition, should I increase the metacam dose from 4 drops to a few more, the vet hasn't really been able to advise much further and found no real problem on the x rays we took in january:)

hi there, what your bunny is going through sounds similar to mine, i got told my female bun had cystitis when i noticed her not putting down her back right leg and she got given antibiotics this was in dec i also posted something on here... anyway this continued and we took her back she got put on metacam 6 drops for 10days and still nothing went back in feb as nothing is helping my poor fluffy so she has a x ray on thurs as they have now found a swelling on her joint it could be arthritis or worst case tey said bone cancer she is only a year old. i dont want to alarm you but i have been so worried about my bunny since dec and its still continuing. i have to put a sleeping bag on the floor for her to be able to walk as she wont walk on any of my flooring its all hard flooring :(

Would you consider acupuncture? My rabbit Muppet has been having it to help with spondylosis in his neck. (There's a recent photo of him with needles in him somewhere in the pictures thread in Chat if you want to look.) You can search for a veterinary acupuncturist on here: www.abva.co.uk

Neither of my two have ever liked my laminate floors. I did have a rug but it was always a mess or I tripped over the edge. I now have a cut-off of textured vinyl down: better grip for them, tidier and safer for me, just as easy to clean as the laminate.

Are his legs contracted? or are they more limp? I had some success using a chiropractor and laser therapy with my CoCo bun. Has your bunny been tested or treated for EC? It can manifest itself as paralysis sometimes.:(
Good luck with your bunny, I hope you can find out what is going on.

I did speak to one of the vets about the possibility of EC and she told me that should be the least of our problems, what she meant by that I don't know, but assume she'd know if that was an issue as she was supposed to be a rabbit specialist and now she has gone overseas:shock:

I would certainly consider acupunture and seeing a chiropractor as I know he loves being firmly massaged and feels some refeif from it as long as we could locate a specialist locally as Ling Jai gets stressed just leaving the house, do you know if anyone is located in the East London:)

I want Ling Jai to enjoy his twilight years in true contentment:love:

I'm sorry I don't know of any chiropractic veterinarians near London. The vet I used was southwest of Oxford. He does travel to see patients but I can't imagine how much that would cost:shock: I would check with your vet to see if they have someone they can refer you to. Best of luck with your bunny:)
