Can u give metaclop and Zantac together?

Boudicca

Warren Veteran
Might have to take a friends bun to emergency vet and just wondered if he could have both as we think he has a pain in his lower guts just from the way he seems to be stretching that bit!

He won't eat and is a bit non responsive, we've given metacam and infacol and peppermint tea which he took voluntarily from the syringe! But it's been a few hours now so half hour more and if no improvement he's off to the vet!!

They can be given together but only on the advice of a Vet :)

ETA- and Metoclop is contraindicated if there is a GI obstruction so examination is essential.

My bun had zantac at a none bun-savvy vet, and then metaclop at an unqualified bunny specialist. Just for reference until someone knowledgeable comes along.:D

Thank you! Yes we wouldn't administer both without a vet or syringe food without knowing about a blockage! We're not gonna leave it anylonger so he's off to the vet right now!

I have used both but I recall that for them to work best they should be given 2 hours apart :)

Still with the vet he doesn't seem to know what he's doing! Just tried to tell us he could give parafin for a potential blockage which he never felt?! Told him no thanks we prefer a hydrated bunny!!! So we don't have much faith he's now gone to consult a book on how much extra metacam to give not that he'd asked us which one we'd already given!! He then got fixated on pressing his gums to see how quickly they changed colour! Ooh he's back...

OMG the vet nurse has now taken Truffle to give sub cut fluids and 'injections' I asked what was the max metacam he could be given as he'd already had .25ml dog metacam and she said she didn't know. Then the vet came back in and said he just needed to do something else and took his laptop! We have been in the room 40mins already and are so worried!!

Well it took an hour for the vet to faff around running in and out of the room checking what we're not sure!! I think he was reading a beginners guide to rabbits!! All we wanted was for him to palpate Truff check for a blockage so he could have some metaclop and some recovery food! He gave an extra 0.6 ml dog metcam taking it to 0.85ml which seems a bit high for a 2kg bun?! After the debate over the paraffin he then tried to tell us he could do an xray but would need to do it under GA which many rabbits don't survive!!! He never even mentioned teeth or looked at them! There was certainly no point trying to discuss using Zantac so he just had metaclop! Truffs mummy is furious at having to pay £150 for an incompetant vet!

1am and Truff has just started to eat a few bits of basil and hay so hopefully he's on the mend! There were a few big gurgles as well!

I would complain if I were you and explain what has happened!
Im very glad that Truffs is starting to eat a bit and hope everything will be ok!

Poor little Truffle hasn't had much luck with vets they opened him up for a spay only to find out he was a he!!!

Well after we ran out of basil he decided he didn't want to eat again :( it's almost like a tooth problem as he keeps sniffing the food but doesn't eat and he's quite lively now! We desperately need him to eat because realistically he won't be able to get seen by a rabbit savvy vet till Mon!! I still can't believe how bad Vets Now were, how many rabbits die because of their lack of care and understanding?

I so hope he continues to get better, in my experience those gurgles are a good sign and mean his guts are startng to move. Do you think the vet last night actually did any good for him at all??

Poor boy. :( I was so worried the other day at the lack of communication from my vets, but I never once doubted their ability - the vet you saw, however, sounds like a complete numpty.:shock:

It's a worry that he couldn't feel a blockage but also couldn't rule it out either so I don't think I would want to syringe feed. Can you offer him some baby food or grated veg though? While Bubbles was waiting for her dental she went off pellets a little but loved grated veggies and also preferred grass over hay.

I've no idea on doses of metacam etc, but is he due for some more?

Sending lots of vibes. xxxx

I never had too bad an experience with Vets Now. Not that they ever looked into why the bun was in stasis etc (but I wouldn't expect them to), just treated it and kept them in on fluids.

Yes we are a bit worried about syringe feeding that was one of the main reasons for going to the vet so we would know if it was a possible blockage but we have absolutely no faith in the vets skills at all! Truff is not flat out but he is subdued! We've given 0.4 of metacam and some more infacol! He feels a bit cool so we're keeping an eye on that he's just eaten 2 sprigs of parsley Im beginning to think it's a tooth prob but his mummy thinks he's got a little pain in his lower guts! Unfortunately we dont have any Zantac! Can you syringe food even if they are eating very small amounts or should you only do it when they stop completely? We have a big syringe, recovery and Ellas Kitchen baby food at the ready!

is there any way you can take him to spring lodge? i mean they also have a vets now service but its always been brilliant for me. and they were so good with Daisy that time.

When I used Vets Now for Dudley they were fine I think it's just pot luck who you actually get on the night! BUT good news Truff has just passed a few small hard poos then a whole cluster of small mushy ones he then started munching some greens and hay!! So we are hoping that the crisis is over I don't think he could take another syringe feed he was a wriggle monster :D
