Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

watery eye after spay

I have just noticed that Stew's fur is all wet around her eye and she is keeping the eye closed. She was fine when she went in for her spay this morning any ideas what it could be? :(

It is probably because her eyes were open during the spay and as she was unconscious she wont have been blinking. The Vet should have applied a special eye protecting gel to prevent any irritation, but sometimes it does not work 100% effectively.

I would just gently bathe her eye with cooled boiled water tonight. If, by the morning, it looks very red/has a white discharge you'll need to obtain some abx drops from the Vet xx

Thanx Jane, i will keep an eye on her and she is back tomorrow for a check up as she wasn't walking well.
I feel a bit calmer now you've told me what it could be!
Hope you are ok and your buns too xx

My Simba had a dental op on thurs and I had noticed that this right eye was wet and staying closed when I brought him home at 5.30.

Apparently its is due to the gel they use to stop the eye drying during G.A's etc... His eye was back to normal by the morning.

He did look funny with one eye open and one closed but had me on a worry too!

Oooh, I wondered why my two came out with funny wet eyes after their spays! Their eyes actually scared me a little bit until the wet look went away!

Glad it's not just me that's a worrier then :)

Just saw this, Gizmo had a watery eye for a few days after his spay, I hadn't attributed it to his eyes drying out during surgery:oops: I just assumed it was because he was run down after it all, I did just bathe it with cooled boiled water on a cotton wool pad twice a day about 4 really gentle wipes using a clean pad each wipe and he was fine after a few days. Hope she will be alright x
