Help please folks U/D sudden turn for the worse :(

Wise Old Thumper
Apologies for the double post but I know a lot of people don't read the care section.

My bun Vin has done something to her left back leg, she's turning the foot in towards herself when she sits and is making a very clunky noise when she hops. She's fairly happy in herself, hopping and eating, although she has just peed outside her litter tray which bothers me as she likes to be clean.

A supposed 'friend' of mine let her out during the day while I was at work and didn't bother to keep an eye on her, so goodness knows what could have happened. I know she hasn't had access to any wires or other edible things (bunny-proofed) so I'm assuming she's tripped on something. She's recovering from EC so she's not terribly strong in her back legs and has been tripping over, which is why she dosen't get out without supervision.

Anyway, the point was, the vet is closed tomorrow, as she is okay apart from the leg do I leave it and go on Monday or go to the emergency vet who aren't too bunny savvy? Also, I have some metacam, is it okay to give her that as a precaution? Thanks all.

No one is normally around at this time, so I'll answer with my thoughts, even though I'm not the best to ask.

Personally, I would give the metacam. They're very good at hiding pain.

I would want an x-ray done to see if it is broken or dislocated. Have you felt along the leg to see if you can feel a difference between the good and bad leg? (Very gently, of course) Maybe you can call up and see if the emergency vet does x-rays for buns. If so, it would be good to get her in and checked out. They might also have some injectable pain killers. Just let them know if you already gave her metacam, as there might be contraindications.

I hope it's nothing too bad. :(

Thanks. There's never anyone on when something goes wrong. Sods law.

I'll give her the Metacam, she was having 3 drops before, she's about 3.5kg will that be okay? I've not had a massive amount of experience with it so am wary of giving her too much.

I have had a feel up her leg and she dosen't flinch when I touch it, and I can't feel anything drastically different between legs. She's been very growly since I came back, but she has off days sometimes so I thought it was just that until I noticed the leg :( That's the last time I let anyone in my house. :?

My vet does have a call-out service on the weekends but they won't do x-rays. I'll phone the other practice and ask. I'm just not sure about taking her to them as I've heard they're very much centred on cats and dogs.

What is the concentration of the metacam? You're giving it orally I presume?

Is there a 24/7 emergy line? We have a open all hours clinic we get refered to out of hours. I would call the vet and ask for advice, check the metacam and see if they agree. If they won't xray out of hours and she's acting fine otherwise then they'll probably say brring her Monday :)

1.5mg/ml. Yep, orally. Should be fun, she hates the stuff

According to Liz on a past thread, one drop of metacam is 0.05ml.

Calculating off 0.2mg/kg, you would give .4ml of metacam every 24 hours. Presumably you could split this up into two equal doses every 12 hours. But according to the dropper thing, that would be 8 drops of metacam, which is a lot more than the 3 you were giving.

I would call up a vet just to make sure. Please don't just take my word on it, but 3 drops does seem a bit low.

Always call a vet to double check!

Thanks. :) My vets has a pager system for emergencies, I just felt bad about paging them at stupid o'clock in the morning. Plus there's no guarantee that the bunny savvy vet will be the one on call. I know they don't do x-rays apart from an appointment during practice hours, when she had some problems before I asked about it.

Ta  She was getting 3 drops every 12 hours. She was on a higher dosage before that and it was decreased as problems got better, the highest was 3 drops every 6 hours, so 6 in 12. I'll phone :D

That sounds a lot better. :) Let us know how you get on.

Hi guys, sorry for taking so long to post back, working and then I fell asleep on the sofa cuddling Vin. What a great way to spend an afternoon. :D:love:

Spoke to the vet, he said to give her the metacam (6 drops) and see how she went, he said as she's still hopping and eating it's not something drastic. Have to keep an eye on her and phone today to make an appointment. I suspect she'll get x-rays. Poor little mite, it hasn't gone her way recently!

She says sniff sniff and thanks for all your help

Awww, she is gorgeous!

I'm glad to hear that she still seems to be eating and pooing just fine. Let us know how it goes at the vets! :)

Vin has gone downhill drastically today. I've just gotten back and she dosen't seem to want to put any weight on her back or front feet, she has her back feet stretched out in front and is sitting on her bum, and is stepping from one foot to the other on the front, like she's on hot coals. :( I don't know how she can have gotten so much worse, I just made an appointment for her myxi jab this morning as she was looking so much better. :(

I've paged the vet and am waiting on a phone call but it could be a while so thought I'd ask you guys. Any ideas, or anything to make her more comfortable? I can't stop crying, my poor baby is ill again. :(

Oh no, I'm so sorry to her she's not doing well today. :(

Did you give her her metacam dose today? Other than that, I would just say to bring her to the vets as soon as you can.

I am sending vibes. xxx

Spoken to the vet, their system has changed and I got referred to a clinic, miles away with no public transport links. :? They said to bring her in, or if I couldn't to leave her and contact my own vet in the morning. :?
Their out-of-hours charge is £88  and then the consultation and any treatment is ON TOP of that. They charge £90 for an x-ray (which I'd assume they would do) and it would be £30 just to get out there in the first place. I'd do anything for my bun but I really don't see the point in spending that kind of money for a vet who dosen't specialise in rabbits and is probably only going to refer me back to my own. :( The person I spoke to said she couldn't advise me on metacam as the vet would need to see her (********, my vet has advised metacam without seeing her) and not to give her any metacam in case I had to take her to my own vet in the morning and she needed treatment which would interfere with it, is there a big chance of this or can I give her her meds tonight?
