  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please folks U/D sudden turn for the worse :(

My bun Vin has done something to her left back leg, she's turning the foot in towards herself when she sits and is making a very clunky noise when she hops. She's fairly happy in herself, hopping and eating, although she has just peed outside her litter tray which bothers me as she likes to be clean.

A supposed 'friend' of mine let her out during the day while I was at work and didn't bother to keep an eye on her, so goodness knows what could have happened. :censored: I know she hasn't had access to any wires or other edible things (bunny-proofed) so I'm assuming she's tripped on something. She's recovering from EC so she's not terribly strong in her back legs and has been tripping over, which is why she dosen't get out without supervision.

Anyway, the point was, the vet is closed tomorrow, as she is okay apart from the leg do I leave it and go on Monday or go to the emergency vet who aren't too bunny savvy? Also, I have some metacam, is it okay to give her that as a precaution? Thanks all.

I could be wrong but it SOUNDS like she may have dislocated her leg.
She needs to see a vet ASAP. Even though she may appear to be happy in herself, as you probably know buns are EXTREMELY good at masking how they feel so she could actually be in quite a lot of pain.
In regards to the metacam, I am by no means a proffesional but I would say that if she is not on any other medications then it SHOULD be ok to give it to her, but really she NEEDS to see a vet NOW.

Spoke to the vet and he gave her metacam and said to keep an eye on her as she seemed fine, and had maybe just sprained it...today,

Vin has gone downhill drastically today. I've just gotten back and she dosen't seem to want to put any weight on her back or front feet, she has her back feet stretched out in front and is sitting on her bum, and is stepping from one foot to the other on the front, like she's on hot coals. I don't know how she can have gotten so much worse, I just made an appointment for her myxi jab this morning as she was looking so much better.

I've paged the vet and am waiting on a phone call but it could be a while so thought I'd ask you guys. Any ideas, or anything to make her more comfortable? I can't stop crying, my poor baby is ill again.

Oh no poor Bun

I am wondering if this is neurological :? related to the EC maybe :?

I do hope the Vet can help her xx

I would get her to a bunny savvy vet ASAP. I know it's hard but don't take 'She'll be OK until the morning', she sounds like she needs to see someone quickly.

In the meantime, I would put her on something soft (e.g. a folded duvet) and put her favourite foods and a bowl of water nearby so she can get to them. Will she take any Metcam?

Lots of vibes,

FC x

I wondered that, but it's completely different symptoms from the last time, she's avoiding walking on them but is still sitting up and can move them. With the EC she was flopped on her side and no response to touching feet.

I know, problem being there isn't anyone around here. The vet will come out on call but if it's not the rabbit-savvy one on duty I'm stuck, there's only one at my practise and the others don't have a clue. There is an emergency vet but 2 different friends went there and were not impressed with the rabbit knowledge so I don't know if there's any point. :( She's had her metacam for the day, and is still eating. I'll put a couple of old pillows in the cage, I don't have a spare duvet and can't really gie her mine in case she pees all over it.

ETA - Emergency vet dosen't exist any more, have just looked it up, they're all by appointment so better seeing my own.

Spoken to the vet, their system has changed and I got referred to a clinic, miles away with no public transport links. They said to bring her in, or if I couldn't to leave her and contact my own vet in the morning.
Their out-of-hours charge is £88 and then the consultation and any treatment is ON TOP of that. They charge £90 for an x-ray (which I'd assume they would do) and it would be £30 just to get out there in the first place. I'd do anything for my bun but I really don't see the point in spending that kind of money for a vet who dosen't specialise in rabbits and is probably only going to refer me back to my own. The person I spoke to said she couldn't advise me on metacam as the vet would need to see her (********, my vet has advised metacam without seeing her) and not to give her any metacam in case I had to take her to my own vet in the morning and she needed treatment which would interfere with it, is there a big chance of this or can I give her her meds tonight?

Pics of feet, don't know if this will help. Sorry if they're a bit big.

I hope she will be ok. If it was me I would give her the metacam and tell the vet how much she has had in the morning.

Morning guys. :D Didn't go to the vet last night, as I was trying to find a lift I collapsed in my flat. :? Must have been in sympathy for Vin! Spoke to my normal vet today, (I was the first person to ring apparently ) bunny vet is on tomorrow so they said to give her the metacam and I have an appointment first thing tomorrow.
I feel better now I've actually done something. Vinnie is still eating, drinking, hopping(ish) and looking for food so I'm keeping my spirits up. It just felt awful last night that she was ill yet again and I couldn't do anything for her. She's sitting on a pillow and seems a bit comfier after the metacam. Thanks very much for your support, I'm going to keep an eye on her and see what happens.
