Shredded newspaper?

Is it okay to use in litter trays?

Need to change Charlies littery trays but am running out of stuff to change it with, and I need to do hamsters cages too so just wondering if it's okay!

I wouldn't shred it Steph I would just use a whole newspaper on the bottom of the tray as it is and cover in a thick layer of hay till you can get some more of your usual. I believe most newspapers are now using 'safe' ink, maybe if bunny is a shredder just ensure there are no staples.

I used shredded paper for a while, but found it really messy to clean the trays out, so now I just use a folded newspaper in the bottom covered with hay

I would never use shredded paper for rabbits. there was a warning about it in the Rabbiting On magazine a year or so ago about rabbits who had died from ingesting it and it causing a blockage. I guess it is a bit hay like so rabbits may chew on it out of habit :?

I only ever use newspapers and hay in my litter trays, and yes I spend ages picking staples out of them. If only everyone read The Sun

In litter trays I put newspaper flat at the bottom and then thick hay.
I have tried using shredded paper, and to be honest, it's too much effort, and it gets all gloopy and messy!

I used a newspaper in the bottom and then woodpellet litter on top. I sweep up old hay that they havent eaten every day and throw it in their litter trays the give them fresh.

I would go with folder paper too......J brings all the papers from work home for me.....Sometimes I feel like I'm corrupting my poor babies with all the boobies that end up lining their trays/hutch

I ended up with some Daily Sports the other day :shock: I've never seen it before, it is pure porn  I felt so sorry for Nutmeg having to sleep on that

Please, please , please DONT use shredded paper for your buns.

We had a gorgeous little bun stay here last year, who on it's first nights stay when I went out to check them all before bed was laid on it's side struggling to breath, it's stomach was solid, checked him all over and noticed a small piece of what looked like paper coming from it's bottom. Called the emergency vet and rushed him up there, but he died at the vets. They did a PM and found a ball of paper almost the size of a golfball inside. The owners were devastated when I called to tell them - they had been using shredded paper in it's litter tray at home:(
