:(:(:(

Not sure whats going on but I am very worried :( Given that she is Newts sister and hasn't been growing properly my paranoia is in over drive.

The vets are full booked so fitting us in at the end of morning surgery.

Melody has been admitted. As i thought her stomach is completely empty and there is no gut noise at all. She was eating fine at 11 last night :(

She is having all the usual stasis meds and if there is no change she will have x-rays and and bloods etc to see if there is some underlying problem :(

We are taking Maddox up in a little while so they can be together as they have never been seperated, even though they are 6 months old,and he isn't castrated yet.

I don't understand how Melody's stomach could be so completely empty by 8 in the morning when she was still eating at 3.30 am :? It was just floppy skin, like there was no tummy there :(

Maddox is now with her and we have taken some food up for them. I need to wait for the vet to ring with a progress report, but if I haven't heard by 4.30 I will give them a call :)

Unfortunately Melody died during the night. I had a bad feeling all night and lay awake waiting for the early phone call from the vet:(

She is having a PM done later today, as we are now very concerned for Maddox.

I am completely devastated, I haven't found the strength to put Dumpling in RB yet and now this :cry:

I will update when I have the PM results, but I think I need a break from it all. This is killing me :cry:

Thank you so much for all your kind words. It has been such an awful day

The PM showed that Melody had a genetic defect to her heart. The blood supply to it was deformed just as it was with Newt. It was a miracle she lived so long. The oytlook is now very poor for Maddox. He is very likely to have the same thing especially as his development is more stunted than Melody's was.

I am really worried about his future and quality of life now, as the vets say they are unable to neuter him if he ever develops boy bits so is now destined to a life alone. Him and Melody were so close I don't know how he will cope. Melody was a people friendly bunny and would climb on my lap and lick my face, but Maddox is more skitish and will not take comfort in human handling.

I left Maddox at the vets until the PM result came through to see if, dependant on the outcome, whether he could have tests to determine if he does have tha same condition. Unfortunately scans or x-rays will not show this defect up. If he were human he would have one of those posh scans with the dye put in the veins but this isn't practical in a little bunny under 1kg and we couldn't fix it even if we knew about it.

He is happily munching hay this evening but looks so little and lost alone in the cage.

On top of everything else I have had to speak to the vets again about Lettie, she hasn't responded to her meds and has actually deteriorated quite rapidly. They are now saying the only other possibility with her is liver cancer so she is having x-rays tomorrow. If she has that will be 3 in a month that have had liver cancer. How can that happen??

Its only the start of February and look how much has happened already...

At the moment Maddox's plums haven't appeared so I need to wait until they do and then guage how hormonal he is. It would be terrible to bond him with a female now and then for it all to fall apart later on when he develops. Plus we haven't got any females for him to go with. Oh how sad Liz  still cant get over the fact that she is gone.

I think you are right, that sadly Maddox probably is similarly affected, but the fact that they have lived so happily for so long is a testament to your excellent care.

its a shame Maddox isnt such a people bunny, but that might change now he doesnt have Melody to snuggle up with.

I guess you just love him and look after him for as long as he's got. These defects do just happen sometimes - in humans, dogs all sorts, and its not necessarily a consequence of bad breeding.

Yeah, poor wee thing  But i totally agree, they shouldn't have been sold at all.

I just wanted to point out that cardiac defects are often spontaneous or occur for many reasons, not just bad breeding, though that certainly doesnt help.
