It's not possible, or is it?

Wise Old Thumper
I've finally plucked up courage to ask whether bunnies have a sense of humour. Totally ridiculous isn't it? They can't possibly have a sense of humour.
When Thumper was a baby & charging round furniture like a dark blurr, I soon realised he was like a small child. If it goes quiet, look for trouble. There came the time when I couldn't find him. No way could I lose a bunny in the lounge, he must have slipped out when I last made a cuppa. I ended up searching the whole house - no bunny! I started again, closing each door after I'd searched the room. At 1 point I turned sharply round to find Thumper had been hopping behind me, all the time right on my heel.
I called this game rabbit hide & seek.

He only did it about 5-6 times, probably because I was stupid & "found him" too quickly.
Well you guys can tell me what else he could have got from it other than a laugh, or just enjoy a baby bunny outwitting a human so successfully.

I think so. One of my favourite memories of Sorrel was when she stole an empty jelly babies bag out of the bin, ran up to me, waved it from side to side, then sprinted off....every now and then she turned back to see what I was doing....I chased her for ages then had a tug of war to get it off her.

Obviously she wanted the delicious wrapper but why run up to me with it unless she thought she was having a hilarious game?

I guess we will never know for certain what goes on in their minds. But there is a fantastic book called "When elephants weep", about the existence of emotions in animals, which makes very interesting reading for anyone considering this sort of question. :)

I can almost hear Strawberry chuckling as he runs away from his latest episode of naughtiness!

He knows exactly what he is doing and keeps checking to make sure I am looking at him!

Those stories melt my heart. I've not had my bunnies long enough really to know the answer to that question but it'd be interesting to read other peoples answers :)

Oh, Squidgy hides! It must be great to be 1kg of black nethie, who can squeeze into corners or behind things.
We have a chair with throw over it, and he often hides in one of the folds of the throw. I swear I can hear him sniggering!

I dont think they have a sense of humor as such, they do like to play games though, prolly more following you around wondering why the hell you are not turning round because he can hear you calling him but your going to fast to catch up for him to go "coooeeeee im hereeeeeeee turn around" i've had the hide and seek games mainly with my boys,

i'm still figureing out the snatch and grab the interesting item the hoomin is holding and running off with it, to make me chase them, but they dont eat or even chew the item, I even tried the "i'll ignore until you get bored" only for them to run back and sort of go ner ner ive still got it, you can look but im not going to let you have it back yet " wee lil horrors "

Charlie does... He binkies when I tell him off! He KNOWS he's being naughty yet he enjoys it!

Nope! Ted has NO sense of humour whatsoever!

If I poke fun at him, calling him names (all lovely, I might add), he just glares at me....snooty so and so!
:lol::lol::lol:

Not a sense of humour but nosey as get out!!! Especially Benson my little man, if he could talk he'd be sayin "what are ya doin? what are ya doin?? Can I see? can I see??"

Alvin used to binky away as i chased him from the wallpaper.. he loved it... some times he used to look for me, hop over to the wall and put his face right up to it, just to see me dash accross the room :lol::lol:

he was an awful baby/teen... never again :lol:

That's hilarious!!!

I think we always underestimate our animals. Most of the species we have, have shown some form of devilment and naughtiness, where I'm sure they have been laughing at me or another animal- Samson, Gigi and Bournville are the most obvious troublemakers, but that may be because they are the ones who have the closest connections to us ( Mike and I).

just because you can't hear the laughter...

Just because you can't hear them laughing doesn't mean they don't laugh!

Our buns play rugby. They dodge and dive and avoid tackle, and every time they evade us there is inaudible wicked laughter! Buffy was always a specialist, but she has been teaching her husbun, and they collaborate :)

And they know how best to get between your feet and into the garage, where there is SO MUCH MISCHIEF TO BE HAD!

Isn't that why we love them?

Definatly have a sense of humour!
Me and Pie play chase. She will suddenly come charging up to me and the stop right in front of me, then I will chase her back to her pen. After doing this a couple of times she will binky all the way back to her pen as I am 'chasing' her.

She also does the biggest binkies when Im really angery and telling her off! :? Like shes actually HAPPY about it! *humf*

"Alvin used to binky away as i chased him from the wallpaper.. he loved it... some times he used to look for me, hop over to the wall and put his face right up to it, just to see me dash accross the room "

Both of mine do this :D but tilly will actually do something she obviously knows is a no no just for me to chase her. She binkies away shaking her tail and head laughing at the daft slow hooman :)

Thank you every one for your contibutions. Please continue & let's have some fun together.
Behind all this, a rabbit made me question, & revise so many of my misconceptions about rabbits, animals in general, & even human behaviour.

It used to be said amongst other things that sense of humour distinguished humans from animals. Most of those criteria have fallen eg. even birds make tools. Humankind had its nose put out of joint when we had to admit that we were not the center of the universe. Perhaps truth is forcing us to eat a bit of humble pie again.

I'm inclined to think that rabbits do have a sense of humour.
They can certainly manipulate us very effectively for a purely psychological reward. (Getting us riled up, or just for a bit of action round the place)

It doesn't quite fit that Thumper couldn't keep up with me. I didn't say that in my searching for him, I was stopping frequently, & getting down on hands & knees to look under furniture. Nor did I say that I would have called him from my chair a few times at the beginning. I don't think he followed me upstairs. I helped him to learn that later, & he was quite wary for the 1st. few attempts. I never did find out where he hid so he could latch on behind me as I walked past.:lol:
Let's go back to having fun.

OK another Thumper story to start again.
He likes me to run down the garden with a piece of string. When I've had a head start he zooms past, grabs the string in his mouth & fair pulls me round the garden - human on a lead!!:lol::lol:
[Whoops the truth's really coming out tonight!!]

ETA He doesn't play with his string unless I'm holding it & moving it. However he'll tell me he want's to play with it by thumping, & tossing the end in the air.

Oh my bunnies definitely play with me just for the fun of it!

One of my favorite games is with Eddison. He has a set of plastic baby keys. I'll gently put them in front of him and he'll throw them up in the air with his teeth. Most of the time, he will throw them back toward me so I can set him up again!! Each time, he seems to try and throw them higher and harder. Sometimes they land on his head, but it never seems to deter him.

Also, Milo sometimes will give me a strong nudge and then race off like a lunatic. Then, if I don't immediately get up to follow him, he'll peek around the corner and wait for me to move. As soon as I catch up to him, he just races off again. Doesn't he know I have better things to do? (Actually, I don't. I would rather chase him all day than go to work.)
