Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Panacur problems

Have tried to give bailey her first graduation of her 9 day course of Panacur today, and she doesnt of seemed to take to it to well, i only managed to get half the graduation in her mouth, some went on her whiskers and the rest was left in the syringe, obviousley i didnt push it hard enough.
will consult my vet 2moro, but just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? and shall i just continue and give her a full graduation 2moro and ignore that she only had half???
any help or advise is much appreciated.
:) x

I have had this exact same problem with my two - sometimes they do lick it off whiskers, but I do worry they're not getting a full dose.

If you're not used to administering medicines, you might need another pair of hands to hold onto her whilst you 'do the deed'. I aways find it's best to pop the end of the syringe into the side of the mouth and squirt the panacur directly onto the tongue or into the side of the cheek. It generally all goes in then. Some people find that making a 'spring roll' out of a bit of spring greens works wonders - just spread the required amount of panacur thinly onto a strip or leaf of spring greens or cabbage and then roll it up and offer it to your bunny. She may well just eat it! Personally, I favour the 'grip bunny between the knees, insert syringe and squirt' technique  Bunny will probably hate you for the full 9 days but they soon forget ........ until the next time :lol::lol:

Thanks, what do you think i should do about her only getting half a syringe full today? im not sure if i should wait a week then start the 9 days again or just carry on and make sure she gets the whole graduation 2moro??? help...

Mine will eat it without trouble if it is disguised in something tasty, like sandwiched between two sage, mint or basil leaves.

I wouldn't worry too much if he didn't get all the dose in, perhaps you can discuise the rest on a treat for him to get it down?

May I ask why he is having the Panacur as it is not normally recommended to do a "routine" 9 day course anymore but rather a 28 day one off course.

i was just told on here that i should use panacur and it says in the leaflet to do a 9 day course 2-4 times a year:oops:

Yes, it used to be so but the latest thinking is that every new bun should receive a one off 28 day course of Panacur to control/prevent EC, then not again unless they come in to contact with other buns, ie, go holiday boarding or you introduce a new bun or they show signs of active EC. Special attention needs to be taken of cleaning on days 21 and 28 in order to break the cycle of reinfection.

My vet (who is a rabbit specialist) said that the manufacturers recommend the 3/4 times a year thing. He says it's really necessary after they've been to the vet for example - or in contact with other rabbits (or rabbity people I suppose) or anywhere they may pick up any parasites, etc., which made sense to me.

ok..so 28 days?? i take it this cant harm the bunn in anyway?
or stick to the 9 day 2-4 times a year?? confusion :?

i will try it, i think the main thing is just to relax her and for me not 2b to gentle with pushing the syringe down to get the whole graduation out,
i cant really guesstimate a half graduation now so will just have to carry on and make sure she gets a full one on all the other doses, i thought this would be so easy aswell

I know - I've given a lot of drugs in my time, but I find the Panacur very, very fiddly:shock:

Ok, have been reading some other threads, sorry dusty rabbit for getting you to repeat your self ;). i think i now understand how panacur workds, so 1 course starting from today for 28 days and then never again unless she comes in to contact with other buns....please say im right :D !!

Oh and sorry to be annoying, but by special cleaning on days 21 and 28 does this just include disinfecting cage and accessories? not my household items?
