  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

my rabbit is 1 year old... i luv playing with him... but 2 days before i relized that he was not pooping =( i dint noe wht to do... im scared.... it has never happened to my rabbit before... i need to noe how to help him... i need help like
ASAP :)

He needs to see a vet ASAP! Do not delay, it could be the difference of him getting better or not.

Hello!

Is he pooing yet? It's very, very important that a rabbit keeps eating, drinking and pooing or they may be in something called 'stasis' which often ends in death.

If your little guy isn't eating, drinking or pooing you need to get him to a vet - even waiting until tomorrow could be fatal, so please do it now.

he IS eating and drinking.....but just not pooping.:? what could be the reason?

i wonder where its all going? :(

unfortunately there are no rabbit vets in my country. so ill have to do whatever myself.:(

Your bunny will end up not eating or drinking if he is not pooing as he will end up in pain from the blocked tummy. He may have a blockage or have low motility from some other cause.

Which country are you in and maybe we can help you to find a vet - it is important to get medication or at the very least some advice when bunnies arent eating/drinking or pooing normally and none of us here are best placed to give advice as a) we haven't seen your bun but b) most of us aren't qualified veterinary staff.

Do you have any vets at all?
Even if they never treat rabbits they should be able to look up some treatments in a book, or phone someone else. They can then find out the appropriate treatment and give it to your rabbit. Most of the drugs they use are the same drugs that are used on a lot of other animals.

Most of the time when a rabbit stops pooing they need a Gut Stimulant and a Pain Killer. These are quite common drugs, Metoclopramide and Metacam.

im trying metacam and metoclopramide, lets see if it helps.

how about Zantec? will that help?

anti-biotics like Metrodine etc are not recommended right??

for 2 days it had loose motions, then he stopped pooping, so IMO there seems to be some intestinal obstruction. Any med for that? cuz metoclopramide is a gut stimulant.

Sorry I don't know about obstructions, I wish I was a vet to help you. Hopefully someone else can help very soon...............

I have just been reading some other threads and it seems that if you did an X-ray that should show whether it is an obstructions or not, is that available at your vet?

Yes, you could use Zantac, it's very good for gut problems .

An antibiotic such as baytril is worth using in case the bunny has an underlying illness.

The most important thing you can do for your bunny is to keep him hydrated. Your vet will be able to give you fluids to inject into him (over here we use one called Hartmanns), but in the meantime you could try syringing small amounts of warm water into his mouth.

I agree with abbymarysmokey that fluids are very important to keep your bunny hydrated (don't know enough to comment on the meds).

You could try to tempt him to drink more by making sure it is room temperature rather than too cold straight from a tap (add a dash of boiling if necessary). Also put the water in a bowl rather than a bottle (not sure what you use)

Is your bunny moulting at the moment as it could be hair.

Good luck, I hope he will be OK and start passing somthing soon.

I'm late to this thread. I recommend lots of fluids too - I've known a bunny gut suddenly 'gurgle' into life after fluids. Also peppermint tea if you have it? Just let it cool down first.

If your bun is suffering from a physical blockage, don't feed him w/ anything water or food. You need to get your bun to a real rabbit specialist vet, and a surgery would need to be done to remove the blockage of the intestine or perhaps the tube method will work on sucking the gas out.

Look around at your house, is your bun chewing on the furniture or the carpet?

Is there any bloat? if his stomach is suffering from bloat, then you need your vet to use the tube idea to suck the gas out first

Or if it is just a little bit of gas, you can get 2 ml of infacol every few hour just as a pre-caution.

If there is no bloat, and if your bun hasn't eat for more than 12 hr., then force feed your bun

1) Get some non-meat baby food, use a syringe to suck up the baby food, get a cup of hot water, dump the syringe in the hot water for 2 min., now the syringe is warm, so you now syringe feed the baby food to your bun.

Every 1Kg of bunny weight, get 100 ml of food inside him per 24 hr.

OR

2) Get some blackberry or raspberry, smash it via juicer. You need about 6 oz. Get some hay stem, cut the stem in 1 mm length, mixed it w/ the
blackberry. Put the mixture in a 35 ml syringe and force feed your bun. Your bun need the fiber to survive.

You need to force feed your bun via syringe.

Your bun would also need metacam, as they won't eat because they are in pain.

metacam dosage (make sure you use the :

dosage (in ml) = wt. in KG x 0.1 / 1.5 PER 24 hr.

for e.g., if your bun is 2.5KG then

dosage (in ml) = 2.5 KG x 0.1 / 1.5 = 0.17 ml

You can use metoclopramide:

For a large 5 - 6 KG bun, 3 ml every 8 to 12 hr.

For a small 2 to 3 KG bun, 1.2 to 1.4 ml every 8 to 12 hr., depends on how serious it is

The important question is, does your bun eat hay? If he doesn't eat hay, then the good news is:

this problem is cause by lack of fiber, just force feed w/ the above and sub-Q fluid will be fine

the bad news is, this will happen again due to lack of fiber

if you can get sub-Q fluid, then give 25 to 30 ml, 3 times every 24 hr., you need to super-charge your bun with fluid

The absolute best spot is the loose skin just behind the neck. See diagram

needle9sq.jpg

it's a very simple task:

1) You hold down the bun
2) lift the loose fur 2 inch from the back of his neck, now you form that empty air "pocket" from the diagram above
3) push the needle in, if it's a small bun, push in approx. just over 0.5 inch
4) release the valve from the NaCl tube
5) You'll notice the drip keep on coming from the valve
6) when done, turn off the valve and pull the needle out

P.S. When you buy the tube/valve kit, ask for the Macro Kit, the macro kit allows the NaCl to drip much faster into the body

==================

if you don't have sub-Q fluid (NaCl bag), then get him as much liquid as possible, force feed water more often, juice can also encourage your bun to drink more

ok im now hydrating him with warmish water. but he hates to drink :( its been like this fr him since forever. very less water, but loads of food.

as for vet, there are no rabbit specialist, so ill have to medicate him myself

the rabbit is not on hay, never has. only carrots and other greens.

the weird thing is that hes still eating...and is hungry most of the time. but im not feeding him that much cuz he might just blow up :(

ill try peppermint tea too :D hope that helps.

i think the best med for his obstruction shud be metoclopramide? and zantac?

and no, hes not moulting.
