  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mystery illness?

This is very odd. I have 12 buns. Over the last few weeks all of them have take it in turns to go off their food. Normally they jump on the pellets and gobble them up but they just sniff apathetically at pellets and fresh veg. They do however eat the hay with more enthusiasm. Their poos are half size. For each rabbit this has gone on for about a week and then they were back to usual. I took two of them to my very experienced vet who checked them over thoroughly and couldn't find anything wrong.

Anyone have any ideas? I wondered about some sort of bug or maybe myxi or something but since they are all innoculated they have only reacted a bit.

Yes, I wondered about that but they are in three different areas - shed, outdoor aviary and inside. There have been some noisy kids around but two gardens away but only occasionally. Thought about foxes but some of them are indoors...

Have they always been kept apart?
Can you think of anything that haschanged recently, different hay? Anything in the environment?

One of my buns used to go off pellets and veg for a day every so often, but like yours she still ate her hay, so I didn't worry that much.

She had an unusual relationship with her boyfriend as they used to swap leadership every so often. So I always thought that she probably got the hump when he took over again.

Have you tried giving Avipro or something like that to rule out a little bit of stomach discomfort?
